AfricaLeap

http://africaleap.com

AfricaLeap seeks to help rural communities leapfrog over the old technologies of the twentieth century and land in the renewable clean energy of the twenty first. New technologies offer rapid development of clean energy sources without "addiction" to expensive fuel or reliance on centralized infrastructure. Zero emission energy for families and villages decreases reliance on wood, charcoal and costly fossil fuels such as kerosene while reducing health risks from smoke. We support local entrepreneurs who can quickly serve off-grid customers with cleantech solutions such as solar cookers, solar panels and wind generators as well as energy efficiency devices.

Florence's loan expired, and she has reposted it. She has a solar business.: www.zidisha.org/loan/to-exp...

Thanks for the great suggestions! Water, sanitation, solar, internet, schools, ... all good!

Davis has solar skills, and is looking for a loan to purchase ethernet cables for internet installations. api.zidisha.org/loan/purcha...

I didn't lend to Margaret, as I tend not to support beauty businesses, but she's looking for a loan for a solar powered hair-curling machine. api.zidisha.org/loan/purcha...

Erastus has re-posted his loan for buying solar lights. He's been struggling to get his loan funded, although it's not a particularly large loan. api.zidisha.org/loan/solar-...

Rosemary bought a solar panel and battery with a previous loan (I see you have lent to her before, Tom). Now she wants to buy an inverter to go with it, to help her use her solar power when the mains electricity is not working. api.zidisha.org/loan/power-...

I am partially funding Albin, who has only three days left. and fully repaid last loan. For his solar installation exam.

  • Treesforpeople     Feb 6, 2018

There are quite a few solar related loans this week:

Albin is an electrical engineer and is doing an exam to qualify as a solar installer: www.zidisha.org/loan/exam-r...

Erastus is still trying to get his loan funded. He only has 5 days left, so I lent him a bit more: www.zidisha.org/loan/solar-...

Florence has a new solar business: www.zidisha.org/loan/to-exp...

James runs a shop, but is also employed by a solar company: www.zidisha.org/loan/transp...

Charles has reposted a loan which expired - he's an electrician with a shop, and sells solar panels, among other things. www.zidisha.org/loan/loan-t...

Thanks Stephanie, I've just lent to Steve. :-)

Here's a good one - Kennedy's loan is for a solar powered water pump to ensure children get clean water at school. It's a big loan though, and only has three days left, so it'll have a job to get funded.

    Btw, Steven’s site:
    www.zidisha.org/loan/stock-...

I love Stephanie‘s point, below; “There are farmers here who struggle to get water to their farms, relying on petrol generators when solar would be so much cleaner and cheaper to run.” For solar lamps, just a few months without the cost of kerosene is enough to pay back the cost of the lamps. I wonder what it is for solar water pumps. Steven might be just the person to figure it out since he is interested in studying Electrical engineering : )

Hi Stephanie, Great to hear from you.
Thanks for the tip on Steven Odhiambo. I have contributed! All suggestions are welcome, and if the entrepreneur lives relatively close to you, as with Steven, all the better ... perhaps you will meet in person one day. Although a few entrepreneurs/ borrowers have joined AfricaLeap, we are one of the many lending groups on Zidisha, and as such exchange ideas on which projects to fund, based on their pitch on the projects page. Steven (and Dickson Maori who invited him) should be able to help the farmers in your area learn about writing a proposal and joining Zidisha. And once they’ve done a proposal, anything that you can do to help us evaluate their project would be very much appreciated. I admire the work you are doing in Kenya. Thanks again for the great tip on Steven.

      Tom,
Thanks, nice to be heard from. Steve's loan didn't make it but I have encouraged him to re-submit.
Not sure how many people qualify for Zidisha here--it is incredibly poor and many people have no cell phone, and certainly few with access to internet. But I will see what I can do...

Can I invite people to join? There are farmers here who struggle to get water to their farms, relying on petrol generators when solar would be so much cleaner and cheaper to run.

I funded Steve Odhiambo because he is the entrepreneur closest to me in Kenya. His shop is in Migori Town, Migori County, Kenya.

Thanks for all of that Trees :-)
Lent to Erastus & Peter, but Jacob's link isn't working...

I know I normally avoid lenders who also deal with clothing etc. But, I feel like sanitation is too big of a problem not to pop this link here: www.zidisha.org/loan/fresh-...
& here's Japheth's newer drip irrigation again... Realised I forgot to pop this one in here, only popped it in Borrowers Lending a Difference... Sorry about that.

Cheers again for the loans, appreciate it :-)
    Hope you're both well, Emma.

Erastus sells solar lights and is asking for a loan for transport to get the lights to people. Although his on-time repayment record isn't great, I lent to him before, and he did repay the loan in full.

Jacob is a customer care agent at a solar power company. He's looking for money to buy a laptop. The company has provided solar lamps to disabled people/orphans. www.zidisha.org/loan/to-buy...

I think Peter's loan wasn't funded, but he's now changed the emphasis and is asking for funding for the solar water heater: www.zidisha.org/loan/home-m...

Margaret's loan is to buy a solar powered hair curling machine: www.zidisha.org/loan/loan-t...
