About Me

My name is Fatim. I am very happy to have recently come across the Zidisha web site. I know that I can benefit from financing my work for clients who want to sign up for phone numbers in order to communicate with their family and friends. I am from a poor family and am the oldest of my mother’s children. I am responsible for caring for my two children; I am divorced from my husband. He didn't want me to have a business, because he thought that a woman's place is inside the home. Whereas I think that every individual should be able to work and benefit from the fruits of their own labor. I also support some brothers, a sister, a grandmother, you can see my problem.

My Business

I buy prepaid calling cards for cell phones. I sell them in a boutique in the market near my neighborhood. I sell the cards often to clients who pass by the market and to locals who work all day long. For each quantity of two hundred subscription cards, one makes about 25,000CFA (roughly $50). To buy this quantity, one must pay nearly 160,000CFA (roughly $360) to the wholesaler. The pay-as-you-go cards cost 1,000CFA (roughly $2) and I get about 200CFA (about $0.40) each. There are also packs of ASDL (high-speed internet) pour clients who use a wireless phone line or Internet at their homes. The women's credit association I previously borrowed from required a contribution each week of 1,000CFA (roughly $2). Every two weeks, a woman in the group would receive 50,000CFA (roughly $100) or 100,000CFA (roughly $200) so that she can work. When the amount was given to me I started my business. After, I continued to contribute to the association with whom I participate until the end of that contribution cycle.

    Good day dear lenders
I thank those who gave me this loan, and I present from the bottom of my heart my apologies. My clients have been taking their time to pay me. This delay is independent of my wishes. My hope is to overcome quickly these financial difficulties with which I am confronted and I hope to avoid future delays. My project is evolving little by little as I try to diversify my products to become more productive and comptitive. I have upgraded my kiosk at the market. I am selling cakes and pastries of good quality which are very in demand with children. I am also selling coffee (Touba coffee) which is in great demand from consummers. I end with thanking you again and apologize once more for the delay in my repayment.

    Hello, it’s me again.
Just to clarify that Fatim is ok with continuing to repay the same amount of 28080 after the grace period since I am not permitted to request a grace period and at the same time reduce the amount due. It’s because, after I explained this she accepted it and also said that this will allow her to settle the balance of her loan more quickly.

    Hello,
I am very sorry for my payment schedule and I apologize to all my backers. This is due to some social difficulties, since my daughter had some heartburn, which was very bad. She couldn’t even eat the rice with fish that we cook all the time. She had almost her own diet which wasn’t easy, the doctor gave her prescriptions that didn’t take care of her stomach. I had to bring her to see almost 3 doctors, and the last one that made her do perfusions since she was so dehydrated due to the repeated vomiting. Thanks to God she is finally better. She was taking 1 bag of the medicine Maloox which didn’t suit her stomach well, Belmazol, and finally it was Azantac and the suppository that calmed her. Really, this damaged and damaged my payment schedules. Now before the month of August I would like to pay the sum of 28080 fcfa divided in two, which is 14040 fcfa for a little under a month until I can get back on schedule to continue paying my normal monthly payments of 28080 fcfa. With the month of Ramadan also, my business has slowed down. No one eats in the morning, the clients are becoming scarce. And I am resting a bit in order to throw myself into the sales of my Orangemoney and Izi and Seddo credit. Briefly, here is Maguette with Fatim’s message: missing Mrs. Julie and all the lenders. I saw Cham and he called me himself to remind me of my payments, and I let him know about my delays and the reasons for them. Thank you again.

    Hi Lenders,

My name is Sam Gant and I'm currently one of the two Client Relationship Managers here in Dakar. Today I met with Fatim near her daughter's home in the HLM market to learn more about her business and her plans for the future. In the mornings Fatim sells homemade beignets and coffee outside of the Bourguiba school near her home, and then moves to her kiosk to sell telecom cards and mobile phones from 8 AM to 4 or 5 PM.

She buys packages of scratch-and-go telecom cards (the most common form of phone service here in Senegal) in varying denominations and passes them on to customers to realize a 4% profit. She also sells digital OrangeMoney credit, a service that allows clients to pay electricity and water bills via cell phone transfer. Her future ambitions include expanding her stock of OrangeMoney credit and purchasing Samsung and Huawei cellphones with internet capability. Currently her selection of phones ranges from offerings that cost $15 to phones that cost over $100.

Mme Sylla is a vibrant, talkative and motivated businesswoman who was acquainted with at least a third of the people we passed while walking through the neighborhood. She continues to support her family with her business, and is eager to continue her involvement with Zidisha to benefit from the economies of scale of purchasing phone credit wholesale. She was very grateful to the lenders who financed her request, and plans to share any future updates as they occur.

Hello to Ms. Julia and to all the lenders on this Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Fatim who is very nostalgic for you and the lenders will always keep you updated on her activity in the Telecom service. Now we have experience with Orangemoney; moreover I have been introduced to your new intern San, who is always ready to walk in the sun in order to come to my home to meet me. I always sell cakes and coffee to the Bourguiba School. In the future, with the opportunities offered by Orangemoney such as the payment of our electric and water bills, the transfers of money to our parents in the interior as well as the exterior of the country, I would like to buy the maximum units of value in order to resell them to the clients and also add to that Infini and Samsung laptops with wifi since the Internet is undependable these days. That will interest the clients also because they are requesting it. Thank you again for everything.

Today, March 8th 2012, the international day of women, Honour and BRAVERY to Ms Julia and to all our lenders. Julia is one of the first lady in the world who works as a leader, helping me and the other women financially and to become leaders by creating a profitable activity in services such as networks (Orange, Tigo, expresso, seddo, izi,...), to sell coffee to customers and cakes to school kids. Thanks to Julia, I am socially, economically and psychologically autonomous; now that our great God helps me to repay my loan and to take a 3rd one.
Bravery to all lenders in this day: Thursday, March 8th 2012

Anicet,Maguette and I are the newest client relationship interns with Zidisha. We have just had our first visit with Fatim Sylla. From our first impression we can see that she is a really enthusiastic, and creative entrepreneur. She used her loan to start her business in selling phone cards and internet credit in which she is very successful. Fatim has a good reputation in the community and would like to start another business. She has completed paying off her loan and is now in need of another loan. She is currently aspiring to expand her current activities into other areas of credit. Fatim has successfully secured a distribution agreement with Orange mobile, a company that allows users to send and receive money, and pay their bills via their cell phones. Also, she is interested in buying a refrigerator to diversify her business options. We wish the best for Fatim in whatever she does. Good luck.

Fatim -- your record with the prior Zidisha loan is excellent. Would like to lend again, but am confused about your plans to buy a refrigerator in Dakar. Other borrowers here have mentioned difficulty operating electrical machinery due to power outages. Is this not an issue at your location? Thanks!

How are you, lenders and Julia? I was able to access my Zidisha account again thanks to your message which I received this morning, and I have just signed on in order to send you my thanks for your help in retrieving my password. I would also like to thank Zidisha and all my lenders, who helped me to start up my Orange/Tigo/Expresso mobile phone boutique business. To share my news with you, I have made an extra effort to access the website and post this comment. I thank God for having helped me to complete my monthly repayment installments. I will be applying for another loan, which will provide the capital I need to keep working and advancing my business. Thank you for having supported me. I hope to hear from you soon.

Jenna Garchar and I, the current Zidisha interns here in Dakar, visited Fatim this past Friday. Because of her warm smile, we knew right when we saw her that she is an incredibly positive and endearing person. We were welcomed into her home where we sat and discussed how the loan has positively impacted her business and life. While there, we were able to meet some of her family members who are also very thankful for the loan that the lenders have been able to provide her with. She has used the loan to purchase greater quantities of both phone credit cards and cell phones. Fatim sells Expresso, Orange, and Tigo credit. After some time in her home she took us over to the nearby market where, with the help of the loan, she has purchased a small space to sell her products. In the future, Fatim would like to obtain electricity in her space in order to have a refrigerator to sell cold drinks. She explained that cold drinks are not easy to come by in Dakar and would be especially lucrative during the rainy (“hot”) season. She would also like to eventually tile her space and hopes to take another loan to achieve these goals.

Hello everyone, my name is Clarissa. I’m here with Allen in Dakar as Zidisha’s Senegal Client Relationship Managers. As Client Relationship Managers, we will help keep lenders informed about borrowers by visiting clients and posting pictures and stories.

We met up with Fatim last week and spent the day visiting her family, clients, and checking out her new store. Fatim is an extremely energetic and charismatic woman. The entire day, she never stopped smiling, and introduced us to everyone we met.

    BUSINESS
Her store is located in a newly constructed in-door market, and she is right down the hall from an expansive and vibrant fresh produce market where most of the vendors are her clients. She is continuing to sell Orange, Expresso and Tigo phone cards as well as Orange Money, which helps many clients transfer funds home to their families. She is also selling new Orange Kirène phone cards. These new cards give out prizes ranging from bonus phone credit to new cars and have been a hit with her clients. Orange money can now transfer 250,000 CFA, up from 100,000 CFA, with a transfer rate of 3%. Clients also come in for help using their phones and Fatim is always eager to assist them. Fatim is also re-sells a few products in her store like flashlights, which come in handy during the many power outages here in Dakar.

    FUTURE LOANS
In the future, Fatim has ideas about tiling the floor of her shop and buying display cases in order to sell cell phones and other merchandise such as beauty products, and baking utensils. She does not have electricity in her shop yet, but is interested in adding it. However, to do that would cost 40,000 CFA (about $80).

Dear all, I would like to thank you once again for what you have done for us. Especially for me. I know that my repayments have been a bit late, but that is due to the fact that we have some difficulty recovering payments from the people who have purchased from us on credit and have trouble repaying, because of the recent succession of religious and cultural holidays. But we hope that this situation will improve and that we will be able to repay on time again as we used to. And we want to tell Zidisha to continue the work that it has begun in our country. The borrowers are learning how to work with Zidisha and will respect their engagements, except for occasionally when events escape their control.

I would like to thank you all again for what you have done for me. These days, I am 100% employed. I am truly very happy for the trust you have placed in me. Because finding funding long distance is very difficult. These days, I am timing the stocking of my merchandise so that their sales will correspond with my first repayment installment which is due in February. I am sure that I will do everything possible to not disappoint all the people who have placed their trust in me. I am especially touched by the fact that among the lenders, there are children to whom I repeat my thanks again and encourage them to continue in what they do. Thank you.

Photos of her store and the busy market she works in are attached below. Fatim would like to once again thank her lenders for investing in her phone credit enterprise.
