About Me

Hi! This is Josephat. Am 23 years old and a fourth year student in jkuat currently. I take a bachelors degree in control and instrumentation and am really inspired to grow in entrepreneurship besides my academics. I was born and brought up in nyamira town. I started schooling in st. Christopher junior academy before taking my education to the next level at nyachururu primary in 1999. My eight year study in primary was fruitful and opened an opportunity for high school education in nyambaria boys between the year 2006 and 2009. I passed amazingly and later joined jomo Kenyatta university in 2011 where am currently due to complete my undergraduate later this year. At various levels I have been appointed into various leadership positions which have come both as challenges and motivations, hence with the huge responsibilities I have grown to be stronger and independent. This has led to me doing various businesses to help me and those around me. I derive my inspiration from doing business and satisfying the needs of the community around me.

My Business

I ventured into clothing business in the year 2013 in January opposite jkuat gate b. it has since been great fun to trade with students due to the strategic positioning of the business. Since there are few entrepreneurs in the same line of business along the street, it has enabled my business to grow fast enough to cater for all my student demands making an income of up to $15 on a good day. This is not without challenges since am operating in an open stall where rain and dust from the nearby road is a major concern. i have always aspired to make the business big and outdo its current shortcomings by renovating the stall and making it more permanent than is now and am sure of a better tomorrow. After my university schooling I think of opening a boutique and a fashion centre where the demands that my business can not fulfill currently will be catered for. I currently need cash to add stock and introduce frequently asked commodities.

Loan Proposal

I wish to purchase a sewing machine and introduce official men shoes in my stall. A brand new sewing machine will cost 350 US dollars. I resolved to purchase a sewing machine that will help me redesign my clothes according to customer sizes and specifications alongside doing repair services. Having engaged in the same field of clothing for quite some time, this will serve an added advantage both to me and my customers. I have discovered a market gap in shoe retail and thus I would also want to venture into it and make some extra cash. Thanks.

I would wish to reduce my payment as I am currently training my recruits. It will be my pleasure to increase my repayment after they learn and start working on a full margin. Thank you.

Hey friends. It has been a good time in business! Through the period there has been a lot of transitions including my college graduation and change in places of stay. I am glad to inform you that I have also opted to keep up with studies after acquiring a masters scholarship in China. I am looking forward to doing import business from this region. Hope you are fine too. Not heard from you for long though!

I have been able to diversify my business after a seasonal break at my clothing business. I am now happy I can pay more with my water supply business. Thanks to my colleagues who enlightened me into that new venture.

Zidisha has gotten me far. From them days when I could just hang clothes on strings in the empty till now when I have built a stall. Am grateful to our lenders.

Yesterday I met Josephat Bundi, a clothing retailer and seasoned Zidisha borrower, at his home in the town of Juja.

Josephat was born in Nyamira, a region in western Kenya near Lake Victora and over 400km from Nairobi. Josephat is a member of the Kikuyu tribe, the most populous ethnic group in Kenya. Kikuyus are strongly represented in local and national business and politics - Kenya has had four presidents since the modern nation formed in 1964, and three have been Kikuyu. Much of Josephat's family remains in Nyamira, whom he visits regularly.

Though Josephat is set to graduate from JKUAT this year with a degree in control and instrumentation, he has been running his clothing business for over two years. Starting out with only string and tape to hang clothing from lampposts and fences, he has built the business to occupy a set of four adjacent wooden stalls at a busy street corner near the university. He has used three Zidisha loans to fuel his growth over the past year, expanding into shirts, shoes, scarves, jackets, pants, and other accessories.
Josephat dreams one day of starting a fashion clothing boutique in downtown Nairobi, where the market size and customer base will allow his business to grow bigger than it could in Juja. Unlike many students at JKUAT who spend time studying, having fun, or seeking jobs, Josephat seems committed to his clothing business, which he plans to continue full-time after graduating.

Josephat, thank you for showing me your business and neighborhood yesterday. I wish you the best of luck!
