About Me

I was born with a birth defect that made my arms and legs abnormal. The only education i had was in elementary school where i graduated. I am 28 years old. I want to expand my catfish business/other fish so it can support my family. My ability in craftsmanship is used to educate other disabled fellows that are accommodated in Yayasan Tiara. I like to develop skills so i don't have to depend on another people, and can also help my family. It has always been my siblings that help my parents by becoming foreign workers in another country while i can't help anything unless with only what i am capable of doing right now. Maybe if i can expand my business my life can be more meaningful, can be a devoted son by helping my parents and get married.

My Business

My day to day activity is educating people to have skill (of sewing, making recycled accessories and handicraft) in social institution (Tiara Institution). Finished products are marketed by help from Yayasan Tiara. I am still single and have catfish farm in Jember that i always oversee every month. When harvest time i sell them to a local market so i can have extra income. The catfish farm is still new and small and i have no money to make it bigger. I really want to expand my fish farm with other type of fish so i won't be dependent on the harvest time, and of course to increase the selling price. This fish farm provides activity and extra income to my family (Father and Mother). At this moment i want to save a lot of money that i earn from my job and also from my catfish farm so i can prepare my future: get married.

[received from Ibu Titik Winarti, director of Tiara Institution where Mr Ahmadi works]

    Terima kasih Zidisha....

    Dear lenders,

We received Mr. Ahmadi's first repayment installment today. It was late because Mr. Ahmadi did not have all of the Zidisha account details that the bank required in order for him to deposit to it.

Thanks for your patience as we work to establish our new lending program in Indonesia.

    Best regards,

    Julia Kurnia
    Director, Zidisha Inc.

    Hi Everyone,
After the Eid Holiday Mr.Ahmadi tried to open a bank account. But Mr Ahmadi apparently has a problem opening a bank account because his national identification is expired. Currently, he is taking care of the process which takes a quite while, especially with him being in Surabaya (and he has to process it in Jember, his hometown). He told me that the national identification will be ready in a week, and the bank account should be done in a day after. I will keep you posted about him.

    Thank You for patience.

    Dear lenders,

The disbursement of Mr Ahmadi's loan has been delayed because he has been away from his hometown for work and for the Eid holiday, and the bank which we use to disburse loans in Indonesia requires recipients to accept the disbursements in their place of residence.

Mr Ahmadi expects to return to his hometown and accept his disbursement shortly.

    Best regards,

    Julia Kurnia

    Director

In a country where social rights still yet highly enforced, disabled people are left behind. And that's what is happening in Indonesia.
Disabled people are often perceived like a disease to be avoided, and obstacle to be removed.
In Indonesia, Disabled people have little or no chance to work in a regular working environment.

Ahmadi lives in Surabaya where he (and other disabled people) is accommodated by "Yayasan Tiara" (Tiara Foundation). I talked a lot with Ibu Titik (the founder and owner of the Foundation) and she is really proud of Ahmadi.
Ahmadi is currently holding the highest position (under ibu Titik’s Foundation) which is the Manager of Tiara Foundation. He basically educates other disabled people of sewing skills and other handicraft making skills and knowledge sharing. Sometime he would go from one area to another to educate members of Regional Woman Association that aims to develop woman skills.
Products (Handicrafts) that are made by Ahmadi and other disabled people are marketed by Tiara Foundation. The profit earned is used to pay the salary (of the disabled people) and the rest goes to revamp the Tiara Foundation. (for the details of tiara foundation you can go to yayasantiara.org) 30 disabled people are living in the Foundation, including Ahmadi (below is the picture of the room that they used to live-very cramped-and now the room is renovated).
Ahmadi was quite reserved when I first met him, but after we talked a while he became more and more passionate talking about his dream. his ultimate dream is to get married. But there are lots of business ideas that he wishes to have someday. He wants to buy his own pickup truck so he can sell vegetables where he is living now (Surabaya) that he buys from his hometown (jember). By using a quite large price discrepancy he wishes to earn some profit. But this would be a further plan ahead.
At this time he wants to focus on his catfish farm in Jember behind his parents' house that he visits once a month. In the harvest season, the fish are sold in the nearby market. While he is away in Surabaya educating other disabled people and making handicrafts, the catfish farm is supervised by his parents.
Ahmadi is the second child. Growing up as the only disable person in his family making him a little insecure and heartbroken. Not because he is disabled, but because he can't help his parents much. Unlike his other siblings that become foreign workers in another country, he can't provide much income to his parents.
Ahmadi is eager to expand his fish business. By buying another type of fish, he doesn;t have to depend on one harvest season (catfish harvest season). By leveraging to other type of fish he can also leverage his profit, risk and options for his fish business.
