About Me

I am a 23 year old business lady.I have been farming since i was 12 years old, helping my mother to plough peoples farms at a fee.I worked as a maid from a young age,15 years, when i could not get school fees to go ahead and join secondary school.I come from a polygamous family,my father has four wives and his priority in our poor family was a few so i went to the city and worked in peoples homes earning about 20$ to 30$ a month sleeping in kitchens as i worked as a housemaid cum nanny.Sometimes i worked on the side ,washing bachelors clothes at a fee.I saved the money i earned through those years, sometimes not being paid and left for the rural area and used my savings to buy fresh potatoes and fry potato fries and sell them at a profit, making some average profits per day. Those profits enabled me to buy a small piece of land in Bungoma county which i am expanding as i continue to do business.
I got married 5 years ago to a wonderful man who does all he can to support me with the little he also earns and i have one baby boy, and now i plant and sell kale, cabbage, carrots and tomatoes.

My Business

I buy potatoes from the very fertile Mt Elgon area of our county, about 20 miles away, have them transported them by motorbike and peel them by hand, fry them and sell potato fries at the gate to Sang'alo Institute of Science and Technology. The students love the fries and this enabled me to open a store right at that gate of the institution and i have slowly stocked it with various items that the students need such as pens, books,a computer to edit research papers (i attended training in typing and editing and basic computer).I bought a hair shaving machine with my prior Zidisha loan and have been succesfuly running the barbershop in the partitioned room next to my food shop.I would like to buy a blowdrying machine to add to my barbershop and a computer to enhance my retail shop to cater more for the students needs.

Loan Proposal

I will buy 2 blowdriers worth50$ each for my barbershop and a mirror. And i will also add my own savings of around 100$ and buy a new computer worth 160$ for my shop plus 10 rims of plain typing paper.I expect to print papers for the college kids in the nearby insititute and i am sure to make at least 50$ per week from typing and printing alone while the blowdry will help me earn at least 1$ per client, hopefully make around 4$ per day.I am saving to build my house and hope this will enable me build on the land i have been paying for.

Thank you Dayton,Family Mueller,tiojoca,Katrine,YoUSA11,wally and nani for the money you lent me,i am glad that the end of last week i managed to get a businesslady who had scored a big tender in a school and wanted to subcontract someone to shave almost 200 young ladies hair (a common practise in Kenyan high schools).I was lucky to be around the corner from the offices and she and i got a deal together and i have just finished shaving and gotten the 3285kshs that i paid up for my loan balance.Actually i got more like 3000kshs and added some from my food shop and managed to pay.I thank everyone for the loan and i'm looking forward to applying for my next loan. My barber business is improved and i now hire a young man to shave kids while i am looking forward to buying a blowdry machine for womens hair.

Dear lenders kindly bear with me as business shifts into low gear. Many of my clients are in the season of harvesting and having beans in their houses for food so very few are buying foodstuff from the shops, infact my morning buns hardly sell at all,so i am reducing my installment amount for about a month.

I hope my lenders remember that you have helped me and my business greatly.I managed to buy my son a toy he had wanted. Its a chinese mini laptop but its worth it because i want him to be aware of the information technology world.

Its been difficult dealing with men when i run the barbershop, the African man almost believes that a woman cannot shave them!!! I hope to change that attitude.

Can't the African men shave themselves? I have never had anyone else shave me. Not that I do not think they could do it, but I can do it myself, thank you.
      Best of luck to you.

Not everyone has electricity and those who have still carry on the habit of going to a barber. Our barbers are not college trained so most are just people off the streets who buy a machine and open up barber kiosks on every corner. But the hard time i meet mostly has to do with the egos of the regular rural African man, here most of them beat their wives regularly and have never really seen a woman shaving in a barbershop. At least my husband supports my work. Thank you for wishing me luck,i need it.

The rains have come down in torrents recent days and even caused the death of a number of people.I hope there are no more deaths. But business is fluctuating because many people have put their money into the planting season, buying and planting seed and fertilizer and paying for people to till their land.I bought seed types H518 and H519 which i am reselling and making a tidy profit.

Dear lenders i adjusted my installments because i have suffered some setback with the delay in rains causing some of my farm yields which i place in my shop to deteriorate in quality.I am actually seeking someones help in getting drip irrigation in my farm in the near future. It only rained recently for a day then stopped and the heat destroyed my tomatoes and half of the potato yield. However i may resume my regular installment after two to three weeks if i have recovered enough.Meanwhile i am stocking books in my grocery shop and they are being bought for the new term.Thank you for understanding. My barbershop is still in infancy but i hope to post my photos soon.I am juggling jobs trying my hand at shaving my clients too.
