I am Rose Njogo, a business lady and a mother of 3 currently living in Mombasa along the Kenyan coast. I was born in Nyeri County in the central province of Kenya in a big family of 8. I am the 5th born in the family. Being born in a large family meant that there was a lot of sibling rivalry in seeking to get attention from our parents who were always busy in the family farm trying to eke out a living.
I was the quiet one in the family and I always found solace in the church from an early age. It was for this reason that after completing my secondary education, I decided to join a Catholic convent to undergo training as a nun. This I did, but I quit after 2 years of seclusion when my health deteriorated so much such that I had to discontinue with the course. When I went back home, my family convinced me not to go back to the convent. They even convinced me to turn down a scholarship that was offered to me to join a sister convent in France. I was very naive at this time and the tussle between the church and the family got me very confused. In this confusion, I got pregnant out of wedlock and my life took a dramatic turn – from a naive village girl to a mother-to-be facing a harsh, cruel world.
My parents gave me lukewarm support since it was a taboo and an embarassment at that time to have a child out of wedlock. I later decided to move to Mombasa to live with my cousin and this is where I began doing business. I was later blessed with twin girls while living in Mombasa.
My business entails roasting meat and selling the same to my clients who come to my restaurant. I specialize in goat, cow and chicken meat. When I came to Mombasa, I realized that there were no such eateries. Mombasa people's diet is mainly Asian foods and I decided to import this idea to the local population and it was an instant hit.
On a normal day, I can sell 50 kg of goat meat and the same amount of beef in addition to about 20 kg chicken. I make around $35 per day where about $10 is my take home after all expenses are paid. I have two workers who help with this labor intensive job. I use the proceeds of this business to support my family since I am the sole bread winner.
In Mombasa County, according to the by-laws, this is the month to renew business licenses. We have started receiving notices from the County Government to renew our licenses before we incur penalties. My restaurant business may be affected if I don't have the proper documents and, above all, obey the law of having a valid license. If I am able to pay timely, I will be always on duty and be able to work at all times.
The loan I borrowed last time wasn’t enough to do the extension of a new branch, so with the addition of this new loan I will complete the new branch. I am happy to have you as friends at the hour of my financial need. I believe you will assist with funding my loan. I need USD 300 for leasing the premises, USD 400 for fittings and furniture, USD 270 for government license and the balance for miscellaneous expenses. I promise loyalty in repaying your loans, as I always do. Thanking you in advance.
