My name is Millogo Adama. I was born on December 31 1986 in Molokadoum, in the Satiri village department, 50 km ca. from Bobo Dioulasso. Though raised in a family of farmers, I was lucky enough to have the chance to go to school at the age of 8. Everything went fine and I got my Primary School certificate. I then continued my studies at the Ouezzin Coulibaly secondary school in Bobo Dioulasso while staying at my uncle's home. There, I obtained my Secondary School certificate. I decided to leave my studies after the first class to go into business of gas retail.
The butane gas sector in Burkina Faso is regulated by the state. Laws define the roles of different actors involved in the supply chain, including importers, distributors and retailers.
Importation
The national Burkina Faso Hydrocarbons Company (SONABHY) has the monopoly over the import and storage of all liquid and gas hydrocarbons in Burkina Faso. Butane gas import is subsidized by the State. Prices are fixed by the Department of Trade, Industry and Craft.
Retail
The retailers are the actors at the end of the distribution circuit, and it is from them that consumers buy butane gas. Retailers sign exclusivity contracts with the distributors.
The distributors are also named marketers, and are also responsible for transferring the product from the storage stage to SONABHY for consumption. There are 4 distributors in Burkina Faso: SODIGAZ-APC, TOTAL, ORYX and PETROFA.
At the moment I'm bound to the distributor ORYX which delivers gas regularly. I pay 1600 francs for a 6 kg tank that I resell for 2000 francs. I pay 4600 francs for the 12 kg tank that I sell for 5000 francs. On average, I sell 15 tanks a day, 10 of the 6 kg tanks and 5 of the 12 kg tanks. Your support will facilitate the growth of my business.
