About Me

My name is Florence Ngulube from Zambia. I am a mother to four children and i have a poultry business where I raise broiler chickens and village chickens. I have a small holding farm where I raise my village chickens and village chickens for resale in the city.

I grew up in the Copperbelt and I came to Lusaka when I got married to my husband and we raised our children in a very close community in the farming. I started a poultry business when I lost my husband and I have been doing for the last 2 years now and it has greatly helped my family. My grandson wants to be a doctor when he grows up so that he can help people who are sick and he has been doing very well at school. My other two children are married and are living in another city.

I want to work hard so that I can take my daughter to college when she finish, I love sew and knit in my spare time and also I love to do some gardening at the farm and grow flowers which bloom very beautiful in the summer.

My Business

I love farming and raising chickens. I raise free range broiler chickens that are now on sell on the Copperbelt as well. They are raised naturally just as nature meant a chicken to grow. No chemical nor organic medicines, home mixed feeds and they are free range. The taste and flavour are great just like a village chicken. The meat is firmer than the broiler but softer than the village chicken. This makes this product a sublime choice for a modern lady who wants to work on her "grand mother cooking skills" for a village chicken. I ask my customers to switch from common broiler to the premium chicken as we shall be supply them with chickens at a premium price of K33/kg because of its distinguishable taste and flavour and it's firm meat texture, the price is more than value for your money. This is the first in Zambia and other world brands are "Label Rouge" in France and Pastured chicken in the USA.

It costs me K20/kg to raise a the chickens and I raise them in batches so that I am able to sell chickens every 2 weeks so I know I will be able to pay my Zidisha Loans.

Loan Proposal

I plan to use the loan to buy 300 chicks, 24 bags of chicken feed, 4 bags of maize meal and 2 extra drinkers for the next chicken rearing cycle.

When the chickens are fully grown in about 6 weeks time, I will sell them to a restaurant that operates near my farm. This will save me from spending a lot of money on transportation costs. We have already agreed on the price with the owner of the restaurant and I will make a tidy profit on my chickens!

I am very excited and passionate about this venture and I am thankful to Zidisha for making it possible for me to be able to rear chickens at my farm.

Income Source

My business is not affected by the COVID-19 crisis due to the fact that the Government has lifted the ban on people operating restaurants. As a result of this directive the restaurants are operating normally and my chicken business is thriving.
