Am a passionate dairy farmer and a sports coach in the sport of badminton. I practice my dairy farming in Bomet county where i focus on keeping dairy cows for production of milk for sale and breed the rest of the cows for sale.
Am currently in the process of expanding the size of the farm in order to have it as a full time job as i have to keep another job in Nairobi so as to sustain the dairy farm. Its full potential has not been realized and therefore have to continue investing for the next few months when the cows calve down and start producing milk.
While away from the farm, I also offer badminton coaching services. Sports coaching takes place in tho exclusive clubs in the Nairobi's park-lands area.
My main source of income are from the dairy farm and also the coaching services.
I make an average of between US dollars 200 and US dollars 450 per month depending on the month. At the moment, the net returns are mostly invested back into the dairy farm in order to aid the current expansion.
Most of the other income come from the business of buying and selling of badminton sports equipment which include badminton rackets, shuttles, grips and racket strings.
My intention is to fully commercialize my dairy farming business so that i can fully settle into the farm and focus in the commercial production of milk for sale.
My other major source of income will originate from the sale of cows to other farmers.
When I get the loan, I will be able to purchase my farm's dairy concentrate in bulk and therefore at a wholesale price unlike buying them in retail. The 270 dollars will enable me purchase approximately 1000 kg of dairy concentrates from the wholesalers. My dairy cows consume almost 100 kg weekly and thus the bulk purchase will be able to feed the cows for about 10 weeks.
Bulk purchase of dairy feed concentrate will be very beneficial to me and my farm in the following ways;
1. With a bulk purchase at wholesale prices, my cows will be able to enjoy the same daily ration of feed or even more at the same cost or lower than before due to the economies of scale.
2. Bulk feed ingredients will enable me to mix the individual rations in the best possible formula to achieve a high quality, balanced feed in terms of protein, energy and mineral ratios. This is unlike the commercial feed which is poorly regulated and the unscrupulous traders sell poor quality feed to unsuspecting small scale farmers in order to make more profits.
3. The proceeds from the sale of milk from the farm is paid weekly by our customer. Without proper stocking of dairy concentrate, the cows may go on some days without the feed leading to reduced milk production and subsequent deterioration of cows' health. The bulk purchase of feed aims to resolve such cases.
4.Costs associated with buying feed at wholesale prices will enable me to grow savings and budget towards buying an additional cow or calf into the farm.
5. With my own production of dairy concentrate, am then able to have a growing, healthy and productive dairy herd. With that, I will look forward to a better tomorrow and gradually my dream of one day growing to a large scale dairy farmer will gradually begin to take shape.
