About Me

My names are Benjain Muchiri Nyaga. I live in Nakuru county at a village called Bahati . I come from a family of two children. I am the first born in our family..I went to Nakuru high school and finished in the year 2002. I am now married with two child. but in the year 2012, I decided to practice farming. I decided to do dairy farming and purchased one dairy cows from a breeding farm in Central Kenya: 1 Friesian-Ayrshire. The management system I am using is called zero-grazing (also known as cut-and-carry). In this system, the cows are fed mainly Napier grass which I produce myself, supplemented by daily meals and mineral concentrates. I also graze the cows each day on our land, mainly to provide them with some exercise. The reason I decided to have a dairy business is that there is high demand for milk in our area. Due to low local production levels (mainly because the local breeds do not produce much milk), much of the fresh milk is gotten from the neighbouring towns. This milk is often watered down. Despite this, the milk available for purchase each day often runs out by mid-morning. Packaged milk or powdered milk are an option, but they are much more expensive and hence out of reach for most families. This has created a huge business opportunity for me, since I can supply fresh milk that is not watered down. I love my Dairy farming because it has provided money for my family. I am able to support family from the profit I get from selling milk.

My Business

Regarding My Business
My business is dairy farming. There is a lot of demand in terms of milk. many people in my village rely on the milk that I produce and the business is profitable. Most of the farmers in my village have not yet crossbred their cows, thus making me being the most of the few ones who produce much milk in large quantity due to the cross breeding of my cows and their quality. The risk i am facing in my business are (a) poor road- during the rainy seasons, transportation of the milk is hindered. (b)milk going sour due to much time waiting to be transported to the local Dairy Society. I usually buys my cows dairy meal from the neighboring town which makes the feeds too expensive. This makes me to sell my milk products at a higher prices compared to my other dairy farmers around. My April total revenue from my milk supply was Ksh 20,000. Total expenses which includes transportation of the feeds(Daily meal, hay and treatments for the two cows Ksh.8,150. Local county cess levy for the milk transported Ksh.1,250. Total net profit was Ksh10,600.This makes me capable of repaying my loan.Through the Zidisha loan i will be able to add one more dairy cow which will mean more milk and in return i will make more sales and more profit.

Filing Loans I
My business is dairy farming. At the moment I am facing transportation problem due to poor road- during the rainy seasons. To solve this problem, I would like to buy a motorbike and to be transporting my milk with it. This is because motorbikes can move very fast in our poor roads.I would also like to buy one more extra dairy cow. This will mean more milk and in return i will make more sales and more profit.
