My name is Shem Mwenda mutegi.I am a Kenyan .a young man aged 31 years .I have a family that my wife winnie who is 29 years and my daughter who is 4 years.I have done my primary school education and attained 471 marks out of 700 marks.went to secondary school and attained a mean grade of C.I joined college and practiced information technology(IT) specifically in IMIS .I attained a higher diploma .I was later employed at Celtel Kenya as a data support executive supporting clients to connect to the internet using their devices.I worked there for 5 years.we were later outsourced to a company called Spanco where I worked as a senior customer care executive but still doing the same duties.
Later in june 30th 2013 we were retrenched in mass that is early voluntary retirement since the outsourcing company affirmed that they were straining in paying our salary.
Immediately that's when my life headed for a nose dive.I had no business in mind ..I did not know how I would support my family since I had no money.During my employment I had acquire a plot at utawala ..so I decided with my small savings I first of all build a shelter for my family a single roomed house with a toilet and bathroom.
There after I decided to combine my hobby and business mind at came up with a decision to be a taxi driver. This helped me to combine my mechanical know how and business at the same time.
I was born and raised in a community where working in a company was the norm.there were no business minded mentors.
I always pray for my children to be all rounded kind of people...whereby they can work both in office and also do business since employment opportunities and dwindling away in Kenya.
I would like for my daughter to be a veterinary.
I like machines. I mostly spend my time trying to understand how they work and purpose of design etc
From that day forth I took up on self employment and work as a taxi driver.
I drive a Toyota ae91 as the taxi to date
I am self employed at work in the transport service industry. I have a taxi/cab that I use to move clients from one point to the other that is specifically in Nairobi and its surrounding.
The service is a demanding one because people move from one location to another. e.g. yesterday night at around 12 am I was requested by a client to give him service from utawala shopping centre to jomo kenyatta international airport .I charged him kshs 1500(approximately $15) and the jobs are often.
I choose this business because I love driving and I have mechanical know how .I have this passion with cars and machine..so I thought that this was an opportunity to fulfil my passion and as well make money. Also the business has a good turn over that enables me to pay rent ,pay school fees for my child and also support my wife's business.
The costs that i meet in this business is car maintaince I.e. engine overhaul, repainting the car and payment of insurance
I experience revenue when the car is fully functional and payments of various licencings are done since I am always on call any time of day
I will:
Purchase overhaul gasket kit - 3000KES ($30)
Pay Mechanic working fees - 2000 KES($20)
Engine oil -1500 KES($15)
Oil filter - 300 KES($3)
After this is done my car will be well maintained, oil leakages will be minimized hence leading to less loss of engine oil and smoking.
Also my clients will benefit because I will always be available and i will reduce down time.
This will increase my profit a considerable full fold I.e up to 90% because I will reduce purchase of top up oil and reduce downtime
