About Me

My name is Caroline Muna. I am a second born in a family of five. Four boys and I. We were brought up in a small village known as Kioru. During my childhood, since i was the only girl, most of my responsibilities were given to me. My mother used to tell me that as a girl who once will be a woman, i needed to be responsible always and hardworking. I was born and bled in Eastern part of Kenya. This is where i went for my school up to college level. At that time life was abit tough for my parents who were and are peasant farmers to educate us. We were always in and out classrooms because of school fees. We used to walk bare footed. I used to wish for a better life and so thought that after school i had to get a good paying job. This wasn't so but used to survive on the little things i got. After school, i moved to the city to live with my aunt as i searched for a job. I stayed for two years without any but eventually i secured a job in a Steel Company. This is where i started saving little by little. I later left my place of work due to the health of my last born child. She was born with less calcium and this required lots of attention . Since the management could not allow absenteeism every week i opted out. Having in mind how my kids dream of becoming big personalities in the future i had to think on how to make life easier . That's how i thought of starting a small business that will not tie me always. In this i mean i had time to take of the ailing kid as required. Kelvin, my first born would like to do architecture or a professional footballer. Ian would like to be a doctor. I like challenges and always happy if i overcome.

My Business

Since i did not have lots of capital to start a business, i thought of less expensive and simple to deal with. I had to look for a room to rent and at that location saw that there was no other business like the one i had in mind. This is how i settled in starting selling Goat's Meat. My butchery is called Kipepeo Top Butchery, located in Kitengela town, Kajiado County. In this location, this land is known as a place of juicy meat. i.e. very nice meat. People visit us from other counties just to taste meat of this land. We normally sell it raw, cooked. We either roast, fry or boil the meat. Unlike other businesses i found this cheap and not complicated as i said before.
sell ten to twelve kilograms of meat a day on good days and half of the same on bad days. In this am able to pay meat and restock again.
Little profits i get here enable me pay for organisations like merry go rounds and other social groups. e.g. traditional ones. Also it enables me buy few things for my kids too. e.g. Stationery for school and home, toys, snacks. In good times i contribute in paying their school fees as well as buy goods like shoes and clothes. I also get afew coins to send to my ageing parents and grand parents.

Loan Proposal

Since this would not be enough for a freezer, i will start by buying a manual hacksaw@ 4$, a [email protected]$, a new battery for the weighing machine@ $13 and a cooking gas cylinder @$62. If there would be extra money, i will increase the stock.
Hacksaw would help me cut the bones of the meat without cracking them and a battery will enable me save on energy since the machine will not be connected to the electricity always. Also the gas (Meko) will enable people enjoy their meal other than prepared using charcoal which has smoke.

Thank you lenders for this wonderful thing you have made to me. Lending someone money without doubts of being paid. May God bless you abundantly as well as this business so that i can't fail you. I would like to add some stock in business as well as introduce poultry meat in my butchery. Initially i dealt with goat meat only. I thought of adding poultry meat and also other foods as Githeri (beans and maize), chapati and also tea. this does not increase cost of operation since it will be under the same roof and same labour.

    To my valued sponsors,
It has been a month now since i experienced some hiccups in my business thus breaching the agreement. I sincerely apologize for the delaying the payments though has not been my wish. I am very grateful for the step i made with funds awarded to me and would wish others in need also to benefit as i did. I may be down but not out! I am trying all i can to let the ball roll as before. Please be patient with me and may God bless you all.

Due to recent chaos experiences in the area business has been down for sometime now hence minimizing daily income. I have been selling more than 10kgs of meat a day but now selling about 5kgs on a good day.

This afternoon I met Caroline Muuna, an enterprising butcher and business owner who just joined Zidisha and is currently repaying her first loan.

I met Caroline near her store in Kitengela, an up-and-coming city one hour southeast of Nairobi. This area has benefited recently from growth-oriented government policies and a business-minded culture that encourage residents to parcel and rent out low-value agricultural land to local entrepreneurs. After witnessing the rapid growth of the city and noticing a lack of nearby butchers, Caroline decided last February to open her shop along a busy street near the central market in Kitengela.

(Before visiting Caroline’s store, I was invited into the stall of her neighbor and Zidisha veteran Lilian Kimko, who invited Caroline onto the platform. See Lilian's profile page for an update on her business).

Caroline runs a goat meat butcher shop and restaurant, supplying both raw meat and cooked dishes to local residents and workers. Her cooked-food customers come around lunchtime or later in the evening after a few drinks to enjoy fried, boiled, or roasted goat served with ugali, potatoes, bananas, and other vegetables. Her take-away customers pick up raw meat on their way home from work. Caroline skips the local supplier and gets her daily deliveries from a Nairobi source, who offers better quality meat at comparable prices.

Caroline used her first Zidisha loan on a gas stove to complement her charcoal one, a decision that allowed her to expand her menu offering, serve multiple customers at once, and save money on fuel. She also hired an assistant chef to keep the store running when she needed to travel or do errands. Although she has just begun to repay her first loan, she is already planning ahead for the expansions she can make with future capital: buying instead of renting a meat freezer, obtaining additional food stores for new menu items, and buying new machinery for slicing and mincing meat. Caroline appreciates the ease of getting a loan through Zidisha, having been unable to secure a traditional microfinance loan (lacking a guarantor) or a traditional bank loan (lacking an account history or sufficient collateral).

The butchery is in Kitengela, but Caroline lives in the nearby town of Athi River with her husband and three children: Kevin, 10; Ian, 7; and Michelle, 3. Although meat is a luxury item, and even though Caroline cooks and cleans from morning until as late as 10pm some days, she loves cooking for her family at home.

On a personal note, I felt compelled to try Caroline’s food. First, I happen to really enjoy goat meat, and I think it is a tasty and underrated (and healthy) alternative to beef and lamb. Also, goat meat curry coincidentally happens to be a specialty of my mother, who even more coincidentally happens to be the best cook in the world. And though the food I’ve had in Kenya so far has been hit-or-miss, I have to say the meat I ate this afternoon was truly excellent. Simmered in a light broth with red onion, tomato, green chili, and cilantro, the dish was flavorful and the meat perfectly tender.

Thank you Caroline for a warm welcome and a delicious meal. I’ll be trying hard to visit other Zidisha borrowers in the area so I can return to share your hospitality again!

It might have taken long for me to post my appreciation to the Zidisha group, but may i express my gratitude to this group. How i pray that this goes on until it touches those entrepreneurs who floated in poverty with imagination of prospering their business but with nothing to make it work. My lenders and other supporters who have made it work, please accept my regards. For those who have not yet got the funding, never loose hope. Keep trying and God will see you through.
I was very happy to have been visited by Mr. Nikhil. I felt encouraged by him and knowing more about Zidisha. I felt humbled to have been promoted by him when he requested for the meat. This is very good. It shows how this group is intended to let us (small ) entrepreneurs grow. Again Thank you Very Much. I feel indebted by this group and would like to introduce as many needy liable business people as possible.
