My name is Flomena Chemnung, I am Co-founder of Green Well.
Green Well isn’t your average social enterprise. This Kenyan business has set itself an impressive target –to give away 50,000 beehives to 10,000 local farmers, who can then support their families and
communities by producing good quality honey.
It’s an ethical way of making sure the honey money goes straight to those making the honey - ensuring that local Kenyan farmers have a steady income.
Business alternative to charity

Green Well works on a ‘micro-franchise’ model, which means it allows farmers in kenya to copy their ideas and processes so they can set up their own businesses.

A). Democratic process
The secret to Green Well success is its strong relationship with farmers. With local areas split up into
‘schemes’ that are well-suited for beekeeping, each scheme is managed by a mentor.
It’s a democratic process. These mentors are elected by the farmers themselves and act as a link
between the farmers and Green Well to make sure everyone’s interests are heard.
“Green well train and equip the mentor and their harvesters with necessary beekeeping skills.”
“They are given the task of going round each scheme to check in on the hives, making sure that they are
all occupied with bees. Later they also help farmers harvest the honey.”
B). Jars of honey
Nothing but high-quality honey
Everything from visiting the hives to the checking and harvesting are done by the mentor and their
harvesters.
The farmer only needs to take the honey to the collection point, where Bee Care Apiaries International
then buy up all the honey from the farmers in that scheme according to the market price.
That honey is then transported to Bee Care Apiaries International processing plant where it is processed
and packaged for sale inside and outside Kenya.

Not only are they supplied with great honey but each and every penny the Consortia makes is used to
enrich the lives of local people by building schools, clinics and more hives to expand the business.

Green well is a startup studio network of Entrepreneurs and Women Farmer Representatives in Animal Production Related enterprises; Bee Keeping (honey and bees wax) products for local and regional
markets.
We have a mobile enabled trading and payment platform for collaborative supply chain management.
WOMEN FARMERS REPRESENTATIVES
We have a growing network of sourcing women farmer representatives who manage collection points,
check and weigh produce and trigger payments direct to farmers. Women Farmer Representatives will
typically source 20-80MT a season from 40-100 farmers, depending on value chain, area and experience.
We are creating business opportunities for more women farmer representatives to reach more farmers
each year. In this way Green well is expanding its Market Connect Service across rural areas in Kenya,
enabling smallholder farmers to engage directly with volume buyers and benefit from economies of scale.
TRADE FINANCE
Green Well will provide trade finance so that farmers can be paid as they hand over produce at the
collection point. Our trade finance covers transaction costs including packaging, handling, storage,
transport, taxes and any value addition services up to delivery to final buyer. It addresses the sale to
settlement gap which typically constrains market opportunities. When the buyer pays Green well the fund
is replenished. ​
How we work: -
Green well has developed a scalable and replicable business model that is producing high quality organic
honey harvested by the farmers for processing and sale both for local and regional markets, substantially
increasing the incomes of rural farmers in West Pokot County, Kenya.
All honey is harvested from hives manufactured by Green well. The honey is harvested twice a year in
May and November. The honey is extracted by
Professional harvesters equipped with modern beekeeping uniforms. The honey is deposited directly into
sealed, numbered and catalogued buckets adhering to a process review, storage and transportation.
Green Well utilizes an incentive scheme to ensure that each stakeholder is fairly compensated for his or
her environment restoration work.
Business Model: -
Representative/ Mentor will develop a partnership with a local Chief by pitching the Green Well Bee
Hive scheme – “If you will give us access to your land and families, we are going to put in a profitable
bee keeping business, in your area”. The Organization then gives the Chief five of his own hives, which
we will give him 10% of honey harvested.

Once the Chief agrees to allow the scheme to operate in his village, the community elects a local mentor
to manage all the hives there. The Mentor then receives a few weeks of training onsite at the Green well
Offices, where he learns on how to select hive locations, how to check hives and how to bait them if the
bees have swarmed. The Mentor is paid based on the number of hives he harvests, as well as on the
percentage of the honey that is produced, rather than a salary.
Twice a year, Green Well sends representatives with trucks and cash to collect the harvested honey. The
farmer is paid for the honey with the Mentors and Harvesters hired to help
He/she collect honey. Each individual is paid 10% of the honey harvested.
As a result, the farmers get USD 50-100 every month for protecting the hives on their land.

Loan Proposal

Inventory purchases. We are buying at least 100 KGS of honey and 200kgs of honey combs from farmers for value addition in order to sell to the partner buyer.

Income Source

We have a supply contract with a reputable buyer. We have three year contract with the partner buyer. The honey and bees wax is being aggregated by the farmers.
