About Me

I am the second born in the family of three. I live in Thika, Kisii estate. I am a boda boda (motor bike) driver. I decided to start the business after being at home due to lack of school fees. My father had bought it five years ago in 2008 for transport of fodder at our rural home. It developed some mechanical problems and my father couldn't be able to raise the amount to repair it. I solicited some money in 2011 to repair the motorbike and since then I have been using it to offer my taxi services.
due to lack of school fees in 2011,I had to make ends meet and that is how I landed in the taxi industry. Boda boda is the name for either Bicycle or motorbike taxi service in Kenya.
The minimum amount that I carry a person with my bicycle is Ksh. 50. I usually charge depending on the distance covered. Its a very interesting and booming industry that has taken Kenya by storm.

My Business

I am a motorbike taxi driver, which is locally known as Boda Boda.
I offer taxi services using my motorbike which includes moving passengers from one are to another, running errands and carrying luggage from one destination to another. I also offer delivery services whereby I deliver mails to various destinations.
My customers prefer my services because I drive safely, offer reasonable prices for my services and also I have a radio installed in my bike whereby the passenger go listening to some music at the back. The radio is located underneath the carrier while the speakers are on either side of the feet guard.
The risks involved in the business is when I am faced with careless drivers on the road who can easily cause accidents. Also, diseases caused by cold like pneumonia hence one has to really really keep warm and protect the body especially the chest.
Another risk is the fluctuating fuel prices. When they go high, it reduces our profit margin as most customers will be reluctant to pay more, especially the regular customers.
Within a month I manage to get a minimum of Ks. 10,000 as profit. This is a job that many jobless youth are venturing into and earning a living through it.

Loan Proposal

I appreciate for the first loan you offered to me.It was of Great help.
I will use Ksh. 10,000 to purchase a brand new rear tire for my older motorcycle. Since I bought it in 2012, I have nit changed it and its almost worn out.
The remaining Ksh. 8000 I wil use it to cater for expenses that include maintenance
and upgrade of the older motorcycle so that it can be able to match the new motorcycle. Also, the better condition it is in, the more it will attract customers, hence an increase in its profit margin per day.
I look forward in some few years to build a transporting empire and am glad Zidisha is part and parcel of it.
Kindly accept my loan proposal and I will keep on honouring my word, just like in the previous loan.
Thank you in advance.

    Mr. Jones,

Thank you for your first repayment, though small. I hope things have settled down a bit so you can give us an update on your business and when you will start making more substantial repayments.

Please remember that communication with your lenders is essential so we can be more accommodating.

    Thank you,
    Cris

    Mr. Jones,

You are nearly 3 months in arrears and we have still not received any news from you. Paul Kamande, your VM, told us earlier this month you promised to pay, but you have disappointed both us and him. Please let us know what is going on.

    Dear Lenders,
I received my loan on November 14 and yesterday I put it into total use. I already bought the rear tire and now the old motorcycle looks like new. I also took it to the garage for service and now it feels like new when driving it. I am really grateful and I promise to honour my word like there before. Thanks for the trust and confidence with your finances. I don't take that for granted.

    Thanks

    Dear Lenders,
I was with Mr. Erastus Muchiri today and saw the motorbike he bought through Zidisha's assistance. Indeed, he has worked hard and now has one of his bikes for hire and the other one is his. In a day, he gets Ksh. 500 on a good day and Ksh. 300 on a bad day from his rented bike.
With his bike, the one he drives for himself, he makes ksh. 1000 on a good day and Ksh. 800 on a rather bad day.
Also, he told me that he did apply for his second loan after having successfully paid the first loan.
He longs to have a lasting relationship with Zidisha.

    Regards,
    Paul Gitau Kamande

As the national lead for Motorcycle Safety on behalf of the Kenya Tuktuk Boda-Boda Motor bike Welfare Association it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the all new national 'TukBodaBike Safe' website.

At a time of economic recession, I am pleased to see that biking is still thriving relatively speaking, especially as people wake up to the fact that, apart from being an enjoyable form of transport, there can be economic benefits in switching to two wheels.

Whilst the continuing popularity of motorcycling is great news, sadly we still have an unacceptably high toll of casualties and deaths from powered two wheelers and, indeed, we are now lagging some way behind our East African partners in reducing the number of biking casualties. That said, motorcyclist casualties are still recognised as a East African-wide problem.

'TukBodaBike Safe' is recognised as a practical and enjoyable way in which we can reduce the risks to be faced when using two wheels. With schemes available in the majority of Counties areas in Kenya. Uganda, Tanzania and Southern Sudan, 'TukBodaBike Safe' goes from strength to strength.

Thousands of riders a year undertake 'TukBodaBike Safe' briefings and assessments, many of whom now go on to take up accredited training, which is our aspiration. Better trained, more experienced riders mean not only fewer casualties but more enjoyment of our roads.

It doesn't matter whether, like me, you have been riding for 30 years or are just 30 days after passing your test; you are welcome to join one of the many 'TukBodaBike Safe' workshops that are being run throughout the year up and down the country.

I am hugely grateful to my fellow TukBodaBike members and other partners who help us to run the 'TukBodaBike Safe ' workshops. Many do this in their own time, not only because of their love of biking but also as a representation of our joint absolute commitment to make motorcycling as safe as possible. The workshops are not expensive and constitute great value for money. You might think that you are a good rider and you probably are, but you will be surprised how much your riding can be improved. Undertaking a 'TukBodaBike Safe ' assessment under the supportive eye of some of the country's most seasoned motorcycling professionals is one of the best first steps you can make towards being a better and safer rider.

I do hope that, if you have not already done so, you go to a 'TukBodaBike Safe ' workshop this year and also that you find the information on the new website both useful and enjoyable.
