About Me

My name is Mary Kihara .I am a married lady and a former Secretary of Maombi Girls secondary school where I retired to concentrate on my business. I live at Bahati near Nakuru town

My Business

I deal with Chickens (Broilers). I brood groups of 200 birds at a time. Each Chick costs Ksh 64.50 totaling to Ksh 12,900 per group of 200 birds. I brood them using charcoal and use a Kerosene lamp for lighting their house. Each sack of charcoal costs Ksh 800. I spend Ksh 1600 for the two bags of charcoal that I require per group. The kerosene cost Ksh 65 per litre and so I require Ksh 650 for the ten litres required. For them to be healthy, I have to give them Vaccine against diseases every week up to the fourth week. Costing Ksh 1200. They need to be fed well to gain the required weight at the right time of six weeks. I use Ksh 42,000 to feed them and other expenses such as to by the dressings to keep their house dry and comfortable. I sell them at Ksh 350.00 per chick making a profit of about Ksh10, 000.

I would like to expand my business so that it can be able to cater for our family needs and create employment for my many siblings who depend on me and also my old parents are peasant farmers.

Earlier in the year 2014 I had written to you saying that I had lost a brother, that brother died and left no investments so we had to take up the responsibility of educating the children because the wife was not employed so we had to take that burden so it has been very hard plus I have my family issue. That one aside the business have been doing so well. I would play that because next year is when the last child is finishing high school due to the above challenges I pray therefore to allow me pay the small amount that I can afford. There is item I have place for sale if it goes through I will pay. Thank you and sorrow for the inconveniences cursed. Please do not take me the CRB this time.

    Thank you in advance

    Mary Kihara

    Dear Lenders,

Although Ms. Kihara's loan has been written off, I wanted to take a moment and update you on her situation. She emailed us the following today:

"Since I wrote to you about the illness of my brother, since then he have been in and out of hospital and was ailing with cancer. On Tuesday night he passed away now we are preparing to burry him on Tuesday on 8th 4, 2014 before us is hospital bill and burial expense. With God’s help after all things I know I will go back to the track of paying. Please bear with me"

Please keep Ms. Kihara in your thoughts as she navigates this difficult time.

    Best,
    Bayle, Zidisha Team

    Dear Mary,
Hope all is well on your side and that your daughter is enjoying her time at college. What is she studying?
I have a question: do you know how Laban Thuo is doing? I have not heard from him since late May. I am asking since you are his mentor.
    Best,

    Richard

Thank you Zidisha team for giving me the loan. I used the loan to buy one computer and other printing materials.i I also bought 300 broiler chickens which 80 of them died. instead of getting a profit a never got the profit that was expected to be able to give out the amount required of 12546. so, I would request the Zidisha team to give me sometime up to Jan when I can be able to organize myself and be able to pay the amount
    Thank you.

I changed the business of broiler to the business of printing and I have been doing very well, have been paying the loan very well and at the right time. Some of the institution which are surrounding have been giving work and have been delaying the payment. I would need to be given up to June to re organize myself and continue paying as usual.

Feldborg, Zidisha is about investing money! In fact, if it was not about making money it could not help! Guess a interest-rate of 3 or less %...no one would invest, except for people that would donate money. The people that get investments to also invest money, what is called a win-win situation. If the interest-rates drops in average under 3% it makes no sense to invest, so the lendtakers couldn't invest eather what makes it to a lose-lose situation. Zidisha raised loans of about 82.000 US$...think about what a new Mercedes Benz costs and then rethink your statement. Right now for me it is just fun investing a few bucks here and there. I would invest more, but as long as "0% Investors" could kill every good deal, it makes no sense to me to invest a few thousend dollars because it simply doesn't pay compared to other investments.

You make good points; another thing to consider is that the nominal interest offsets the risk that borrowers might default. It's good that repayment has been 100% thus far (albeit some of it late), but there's no guarantee that it will remain so in the future. As Zidisha lenders, we are also exposed to currency exchange rate risk. I think it's reasonable, over the long term (say 10 years), to expect a certain percentage of losses due to default and currency price movements. I have no idea what that percentage might be, but I wouldn't be surprised if the typical 3% interest just barely offsets it, so that in the long term, the return is near zero. So, as Feldborg says, it's philanthropy, but with a low interest rate serving to offset some of the risks, thus extending the "philanthropic power" of our (effectively) donated dollars.
