About Me

My name is kwabena ofosu-okyere, my friends call me kobby. I live in tema, Ghana. My brothers are in Kumasi and are into petty trading. I on the other hand have started a farm on my father’s piece of land in the Kwahu South District of Ghana. This is land that my father used to farm on. The land is fertile and very productive. I have some professional skills in agriculture and have a good relationship with extension officers from the ministry of food and agriculture. My vision is to become the best farmer in Ghana one day and be awarded by the president. The money i make from the farm goes into paying the hired hands and buying more seeds, and also to support myself and the family. Farming is a hobby for me, so i do it most of the time.

My Business

I am a farmer. I have some professional agriculture training. I have been farming for four years now. Farming in Ghana is mostly manual but in order to make it higher, every farmer needs to add a little mechanisation into the business. I have a few people who help me weed, plant and harvest. I have a vegetable farm and a sorghum farm. My association with the ministry ensures that my grain is bought by the government but i have to sell my own vegetables. I spend about $500 per acre of crops and i make about 30-40% of that from the sales. The sale of vegetables is high and brings in a lot of money but storage is a problem sometimes so i want to buy a refrigerator. Also, cost of inputs like NPK fertilizer and insecticides is high, and if not done well, you can lose all your crops. With the training from the ministry extension agents, we are able to avoid losses. There is more land that i want to farm on and get more help. I will then produce more and make more money. One major problem i have is transportation to the market site. This is why I want to buy a truck to carry vegetables from the farm to the market. I will use this truck to transport other farmers’ crops too at a fee.

Loan Proposal

If granted this loan, i will buy more inputs and seeds for the farm and increase the acreage. This will increase my yield and profit. This will go a long way to make things a bit easier in the business. i will gradually save money for a refrigerator and then aim at buying the tractor. With the help from Zidisha i will grow my farm into the national standard and get closer to my aim of becoming the best farmer in Ghana. thanks to all the lenders and Zidisha.
