About Me

Am George Olayo a resident of Busia County, Bujumba Village, during my childhood I grew up in the hands of my maternal grandfather I recall we used to carry roasted sweet potatoes and sour milk for lunch while grazing cattle far away from home. My mother was attending teachers training college then while my father who was polygamous used to work miles away. My mother struggled with my education from primary up to ‘O’ level, she was unable to take me to ‘A’ level due to financial constrains since there were other 3 siblings behind me who needed support. After ‘O’ Levels I worked briefly as a bartender in our local market, later got a job in Civil Service, for 20 years I wasted my time drinking alcohol not bothering about progressing in my education. In 2004 I saw the light went back to books got promoted to an Accountant. My old friends used to bother me a lot asking for handouts to go drink whenever I was home. In 2009 I sunk a borehole and began to grow vegetables through irrigation, later in 2013 I constructed a greenhouse concentrating in tomatoes. That idea has worked wonders most of my peers are now engaged in some form of income generating activities. Our lands are highly productive when managed well farmers can reap good harvests twice a year, where I live the community, embraces agricultural production though on small scale, because the educated view it as a poor man’s job. I want to turn around this perception by proving that with modern technology farming is the way to go for all. My children talk of being Doctors, Lawyers and Engineers when they grow up. I am a Christian with Deliverance church Intl, am in the sanctuary department which is charged with cleaning, chairs, toilets and general hygiene.

My Business

As a farmer, I have been actively involved in this sector since 2014 when I took early retirement from civil service am planting vegetables and tomatoes, cereals, etc. About 300$ is generated from the farming enterprise monthly, 150$ goes into the cost of production. The profits are used to cater for school fees for my children, savings for land purchase, buy quality seeds and maintenance of the greenhouse. In our area, many families eat pork, however the pigs are not kept in a hygienic environment, and they are fed on mixed wasted food which is contaminated. I chose this kind of business because of high demand on the ground and in the community around us. It is also my passion to plant food crops, keep domestic animals and sell for income generation so that I can provide for the basic needs of my family and support some socio economic needs of the community I live in.

Loan Proposal

Hello zidisha family, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the zidisha family in helping me realize my goal through farming. With this loan, I plan to buy two hybrid pregnant sows that will cost 500 dollars. The sows will help in cash flow improvement to about 25%, as pork meat is on high demand both locally and internationally. Composite manure will be used for soil improvement hence high food production as well as biogas production this will reduce the cost of firewood which is currently environmentally destructive, the surplus will be sold to nearby farmers. Intensive pig farming business can be great income opportunities for the small and landless farmers, unemployed educated or uneducated young people and for the rural women.
