About Me

I am a recent graduate from Kenyatta University where I pursued a degree in bachelor of science in telecommunications. A few years ago, i was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that affected my upper right leg. Scans showed it was a cancerous growth and I underwent chemotherapy and surgery. Now I am 6 years cancer-free and I live to tell my story. To show my appreciation for the support given to me, I started a computer center project as a sign of giving back to the community. My father, David Okong'o is running an organization, House of Hope Ministries which strives to assist orphans, widows and vulnerable children with food, education, healthcare and shelter needs in a Christian environment. The House of Hope Ministries center is located in Katito, about 40-minute drive from Kisumu in the western part of Kenya. The center consists of a school, a church, a medical center, and a children's orphanage home so I thought it would be great adding a computer center.

The purpose of the computer center is to help people master basic computer literacy skills as not many people in the rural community don't have access to these things. The skills that will be offered are an introduction to computing (windows 8), Microsoft office excel, Microsoft office word, Microsoft office Powerpoint, typesetting, internet and emailing. The computer project will be used by the pupils at the school during their computer classes, it will be used by the children living at the orphanage. Everyone who will be willing to learn will have the opportunity. The computer lab will also be of use of the staff at House of Hope when the need to carry out research work or printing reports.

My Business

I am planning to start a micro-business and run a cyber cafe at the computer center. I am here asking for a loan of $1000 to have internet installed at the lab. Once we have internet installed, people from the community will be accessing the internet for a small fee. Many people especially the youth like to keep in touch with social media so this will be their hotspot as the Internet Service Provider is among the fastest in the region. Other services that will be charged and bring income: printing, typing, assisting in online government services, lamination of documents etc
I obtained the equipment at the computer center through a YouCaring fundraiser page where i managed to raise $1720 which were used to purchase 2 desktops, 1 all in one computer, some tables and chairs. Some equipment were donated by friends(2 laptops). The computer lab is made out of a fabricated container which my father helped out in obtaining and converting the . I topped up a little with the savings i had.

In the near future, i hope to complete the computer project with over 15 computers ( we currently have 5 computers). I see the children being happy and giving testimonials of how the computer center has impacted their lives. I hope to have a hired computer trainer who will assist in teaching since i am still a student and will be away for most of the time. I hope to have internet connection installed since that will be where we will generate a small income.

Loan Proposal

The funds will be used to purchase equipments such as router, switch as we slowly exand to have wireless internet installed at the cyber cafe.
