My name is Miriam Ndunge come from the Eastern part of Kenya in place well known as Machakos. I was born in a family of nine children being the sixth born in the family. we were six girls and three boys, my parents were not employed so they totally depended on farming as the only source of their income. so due to this educating us was not all that easy.
when i was about to start my schooling my father passed away. we were left with our mother to feed and educate the nine of us. My mother being a window struggled so much to meet all our needs but some times it was very hard. so most of the days we found ourselves going without food and even clothing. All my elders did manage to go up to primary level but i was the only one who managed to move up to the high school level. I passed my high school very well but my mother was not able to pay for my high education. Due to this i started looking for my own life. I moved from my home area to the Rift valley part of Kenya in an area known as Ongata Rongai where i am currently residing. I started a shop which did very well and i managed to buy a plot and build my own house.
After that i started my own family and because we all depended on the income from the shop and started poultry farming in my compound. This business of poultry has helped me so much. I can educate and feed my family with it. I keep different types of chicken but the one i have specialized on is the broilers.
I have now specialized in broiler keeping for the last four years. I started with a hundred one day old broiler chicks. After taling a good care of them I was able to sell them within a period of two months. I was able to make a net profit of eight thousand Kenya shillings from there I was able to increase the number to two hundred. I did the same and I also increased my profit to fifteen, thousand Kenya shillings I went on increasing every harvest up to now I keep five hundred broilers which give me a net profit of around thirty thousand Kenya shillings.
I find this business being very easy for me to manage because I do it from my own compound. Also the market price is at a fixed rate. So when I go for the market I go at a price which I know.
The challenges which I have met in the business is that in my area most of the people keep broilers so sometimes the market is in flood. Also due to this you find the outbreak of the poultry related diseases is at a risk. So in times I experience the disease outbreak.
The other challenge is our country’s economic crisis. It has affected my business very much. Due to all this my business has experience a slight drop. So I was looking for how to increase my business. I was looking for extra capital as to stabilize my business again and after searching I have come to meet my friends in zidisha family. So I wish to join the family and get on moving.
When i get the new loan I would want to bring in another new breed of chicken. The cost of one day old chick is 120 Kenyan shilling per chick.I want to purchase 100 chicks.the total cost will be 12000 Kenyan shillings.the remaining money will buy the feeds at a cost of 2500 Kenyan shilling per 50kg bag of unga feeds making it to 10 bags at a total cost of 25000 Kenyan shilling. This plus my personal savings from my old stock will enable me to achieve my target.
