I grew up and schooled in Nyeri. After high school I went to college where I studied tailoring and dress making then got married and had five children. My husband later passed on and currently I live with my five children. I dream of a much better future where I will have a prosperous business, be economically stable and purchase a house of my own. Before I started my current business of bead works and basketry, I used to sell clothes in different towns but had to stop due to asthma which made it difficult for me to travel.
My business deals in bead works and basketry. I make and sell beaded baskets and trays as well as necklaces, earrings, finger rings and key holders. I also sell Kikoi clothes, Kitenge clothes as well as kanga clothes (wrappers) and sandals. I entered into business in order to be able to provide for my family needs after the death of my husband. My biggest challenge is where I can get more money to improve my business. Most of my customers are gift shops which buy my products on order. However, I also sell at retail prices to individuals. I hope to expand this business in future and start selling to customers outside Kenya.
Since I am selling these bags and bracelets and my customers love matching everything I want to introduce some earrings and necklaces so that they can match their whole wardrobe. I also want to introduce some diapers because the mothers are always asking about that when they see the other goods I have. For the beads I use for my jewelry I want to buy them wholesale because they’re less expensive. This will cost me $450
Since I have gotten the last loan I have worked to calculate the expenses and profits and this time I can be very wise about my spending and I hope to increase the profit because of that. Now I will not strain so much about where I can find money to improve my business. Because I’ll be purchasing wholesale I’ll be able to reduce the costs of transport and improve quality and quantity of my jewelry.
If the business is doing well and I have enough profit I will feel comfortable in the house. Now if a big problem comes I will have the courage to face it because I will have the money.
