My name is Alfred, born in Kitui County of Eastern region of Kenya. I was born in a family of 6 and I am the second born. Kitui is a semi arid area and the main activity there is farming though on a small scale. I was born in a rural setup where we didn’t have some basic essentials like electricity and piped water. Life was very simple and I grew up in this environment until I relocated to Mombasa in the 1990s after completing my education.
I went to Mombasa city to attend a college where I did a certificate course in mechanical engineering. I secured a job shortly after completing my course and I worked for a local company for one year. I then quit due to low salary and poor working conditions.
It is at this point that I decided to start a career in photography. Armed with a still film camera that I had bought with my savings, I started taking photos in my neighborhood and in social events such as weddings and birthday parties. With time, my clientele grew and I started getting big photography jobs such as corporate events.
I later decided to start shooting and editing videos to supplement my income. This is what I am still doing.
I am married with two children who are 11 to 15 years old and they are both in school.
As aforementioned, I am in photography business. I normally take photos and videos for social events like weddings, gospel crusades and music production. My clients normally contract me a few weeks to the function.
My work is usually to record an event and to edit it using computer and then deliver the finished product to the client usually in form of DVDs. I make a net income of about $400 every month.
This work takes long hours in all stages and I have one assistant who helps me with this production.
I am a photographer but I decided to venture into sales of photography accessories a a few months ago. I started with a few batteries and tripod stands and the business is very promising. The only limiting factor is capital and I am glad that I have been given this opportunity to ask for more credit from Zidisha.
To this end, I intend to buy a dozen camera batteries and this will cost about USD 300 and two tripod stand at a total cost of USD 120. This will earn me about 30% profit and this will contribute to further growth of my business.
Thank you.
