About Me

My name is Queen Kendi, born and raised in a family of 6. I am the last born in the family. I was born and bred in Nanyuki in central Kenya. I love my hometown, but I decided to relocate to Mombasa where my sister works just to break free from my parents, who still treat me like a baby. This used to annoy me because they would monitor my every move, and I decided to break free after I finished my secondary education.

My sister runs a number of businesses and, once I went to her place, she took me to her boutique where she employed me as an attendant. I took my work seriously and my sister was so impressed with my hard work and she gave me quick pay raises. Since I had very few overheads (I was still living in her house), I saved more than half of my savings and, after 1½ years and with my sister’s blessings, I decided to open my own business.

I used the time that I was employed to create contacts with suppliers and customers, and these contacts became valuable in running my nascent business. This is my second year in business, and despite many challenges that I face, I am confident that I gonna make it big in this field.

My Business

My business entails buying and selling clothes and I specialize in women's wear. I am surrounded by many offices, and most of my clients are people who work in these offices. I also reach out to people through social networks such as Facebook.

I normally get my clothes to sell from suppliers who get them from the Far East (Turkey, Singapore and India). My profit is around 30% of the buying price, though this can change depending on the demand of a particular piece of clothing. My desire is to accumulate enough money to enable me to source the stock directly from the international markets. This will need huge amounts of money, but with the little strides that I have made so far, I can see it happening in 2 to 3 years.

I have tried to get credit several times, but the local institutions keep turning me down since my business is quite new and they are also not very comfortable loaning people of my age (I am in my early twenties). I heard about Zidisha through my sister and I jumped into the idea, since I can now see the light at the end of a tunnel.

Loan Proposal

I recently moved my business from backstreet to the main street of Mombasa. The clientele here is a good mix of low and upscale buyers. I need to add stock of trendy shirts to address the upscale buyers who prefer high quality clothes.

I want to start by stocking shirts, which from my own assessment are in high demand. With this money I will be able to buy a stock of 2 dozen assorted shirts. My profit margin is normally 25% and so this venture will pay dividends pretty soon.

Thank you for reading my proposal and kindly lend my project.
