About Me

I am a mother of two and I've started a retail shop to help my family with the additional income I make. My husband runs a mini bakery in our home and I run a shop and from this we are able to raise our family. My husband's bakery supplies cakes and buns to the nearby market and wholesale shops around.

My Business

My business is a retail shop where I sell home essentials such as cooking fats, sugar, salt, bread, milk and many more. From this business alone, I make a profit of over Ksh 12,000 every month and my expenses are very low as I don't pay rent because I use my house which I built for this purpose. My husband runs his bakery here as well and the business is good.

Loan Proposal

Lenders I will use the loan to increase the stock of my shop by buying new products to my costumer. this will make my shop one stop shop where my customers will be able to access more products. This will enable me to buy more household goods on bulk and receive good trade and cash discount where by my customer will have to pay less prices and this will increase my sales by 20%

    February 6, 2013

Hello, my name is Traci Yoshiyama, Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Manager. I am currently visiting Zidisha borrowers in and around Nairobi.

Thirteen, an unlucky number to some, but for Zidisha borrower Sarah Wanjiku, thirteen is the number of years she has spent building a name for herself. In the year 2000, Sarah opened Kieni Shop, a modest general store named after her hometown, and within the years that followed, Kieni Shop became known to all. As I wait for Sarah in the town center, she calls me to tell me to take a motorbike to her shop, “They know it,” she says. And without a doubt, they did.

With a jovial disposition and a smile to match, Sarah welcomes me to her home, an all-in-one place of residence for her family, Kieni Shop, and her husband’s bakery. Almost doubling in size over the years, Sarah’s mom-and-pop store has a little bit of everything; mandazi (made fresh from her husband’s bakery) for a hungry passerby, soft drinks for a hot day, toiletries for our every day needs, and even super glue for quick repairs. With the help of her first Zidisha loan, Sarah is now a wholesale supplier, purchasing her first wholesale item, maize flour. Although the loan only allowed her to buy a small amount of stock, Sarah is excited to take out a second loan, hopefully doubling her wholesale inventory.

Giving me the grand tour, Sarah invites me next door to her husband’s bakery, Muhonia Bakers, to get a closer look. Emanating from room to room, the air is filled with the aroma of delectable cakes and pastries. Employees are hard at work mixing, kneading, pouring, and shaping, while also a bit perplexed by my sudden appearance. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, one would never imagine a thriving general shop and well-established bakery to exist inside. But lo and behold, these two successes have provided for a family of five, sending all three children to school.

Before I leave, Sarah fills a bag with far too many cakes (very yummy by the way) and like many others, introduces me to a friend interested in Zidisha. Thank you Sarah for a very nice visit! I am glad that you have joined the Zidisha community and I look forward to seeing your continued success.
