I am Moses Ochieng, 23 years old and the 3rd born among 4 siblings. I went through my education in Government funded schools and upon completion of primary education, I did not proceed to High School due to lack of school fee.
Both my parents are peasant farmers. My parents have very low income and this couldn't enable them to educate all their children due to limited income even though they desired so.
Upon completion of my primary education, life became unbearable and I had to look for money to help support my struggling parents feed the family. I started doing menial jobs and going out for fishing in order to get money to buy food and clothes. I managed to save KES 7,000 from the menial jobs I was doing. This is the money that I started my business with.
I am now married and my wife is still unemployed though she is helping me alot in household chores as I am fully engaged in the fishing business and the income from the business helps to support my family and my parents. In my free time, I do participate in Community Development & Soil Conservation activities as the Patron of our Village Youth for Change Club in Lwanda Village of Mbita Sub County.
Having dropped from school, I joined fishing industry as a young person in the year 2011 and since then I have been working very hard to support my family using proceeds from my fishing business as my life and family survival depends on fishing . I used my savings to purchase my own fishing boat and fishing gears. I started with one boat and it has been doing so well in business when the fish catches are high. One boat fully operational costs U$ 1,200. I deal with catching the small fish 'omena' and it also has some challenges.
In average, I earn weekly income of US$60, and then I pay workers and other expenses with $30 I then remain with $30; I use part of this to pay for my siblings school fee and family upkeep.
I am seeking a loan of KES 23,052 from ZIDISHA Lenders to enable me buy five energy saving solar-powered lantern lamps to help me reduce the cost of buying kerosene fuel for use in lamps for night time fishing. The kerosene powered lamps are not environmental friendly and is not economic productive for the fishing business, I look forward to increasing my income per day from KES 1300 to KES 1,900 due to savings on fuel purchase as I will be using energy saving and environmental -friendly solar-powered lamps to catch fish.
