I am Dunstan Were from Kenya. i am the first born in my family and my siblings look out to me. i am currently doing a farming business on a small scale and i intend with the help of zidisha to grow my business and expand to the next level. i also look forward to continue with further studies so as to equip myself and be able to blend in more suitably with the current needs of the society.
i have a small business whereby i grow tomatoes for sale mainly to my neighbors at a small scale. I however earn about 800ksh per week from the sale of the same but with the help of a loan from Zidisha, i intend to grow my business by acquiring a green house which will help me a great deal to expand my business and get more profits in return.
the expansion of my business will in turn help me acquire funds to continue with my education and consecutively help me towards achievement of my goals.
I will use the loan disbursement to buy more tomato seedlings
I will choose a nursery site where potatoes, eggplants, peppers and cape gooseberries have not been grown for the last 3 years because of disease risk. A seed rate of 50-100g will give me seedlings enough to plant 1/4 an acre. I will Sow the seeds in drills 20 cm apart and 1cm deep. Thin out to 7cm apart latter in rows in order to raise strong seedlings.
If soils are poor in organic matter, i will apply 5kg of well decomposed manure per square meter prior to transplanting to improve yields of tomatoes.
About one month after sowing seeds in the nursery, or when the plants are about 10-15cm high i will transplant them to the main farm and water thoroughly 2-3 times every week until they become mature for harvest
