About Me

I am Silpa Adoyo, I was born in 1976 in Migori County. I live in Kasgunga ward of Homa Bay County, Kenya. I completed my primary education but due to peer influence, I dropped off from school and got married at a very young age.

Marriage life was good but it was very hard to feed the two children we were blessed with in our marriage. Since my husband was also unemployed, I had no option but to venture into small scale business to be able to earn a living.

My eldest daughter has joined High School and youngest one is in final year of primary education. The business is supporting the family well and I look forward to expanding it further using funds raised from the ZIDISHA platform.

In my free time, I do visit my friends to share ideas and resources while encouraging one another.

My Business

I have run this business for the last 10 years. I am a small scale fresh fruits and grains trader mostly selling to the ultimate consumer, as my business has not expanded enough to make me a supplier. I mostly trade in fresh on farm products like; green maize (corn), rice, beans, green grams and lentils, to name a few.

I conducted some market research and did due diligence whereby I discovered that food products are very unlikely to lack a market because they are basic necessities. The target group for such kind of commodities is virtually everyone. Another motivation is that I wanted to contribute in food security and ensure it is done so by ensuring that my customers are always well supplied. I also need to operate with a license and the backing of the health sector, as the handling of food items is a sensitive matter. My monthly revenue is $ 90 on average and comes purely from selling the fruits and grains. My monthly costs go up to $40 on average, giving me a profit of around $ 50 per month. This profit goes towards my savings, my children education and meeting my family's expenses. I look forward to having a stable income from the business as it expands.

Loan Proposal

I am seeking a loan of KES 9,012 to enable me add fresh food stock for sale at my food kiosk in Mbita, Kenya. The loan will be used as follows;
-KES 3000 to be used to buy assorted pieces of watermellons, pawpaw, mangoes and oranges
-KES 4500 to be used to buy 80 kgs of dried Maize for re-sale
-KES 1,500 to be used to buy assorted onions, tomatoes and carrots for sale.
With adequate fresh products to sale, my income will increase and the business will grow by 40%. I will use the increased profit to re-invest in the business and 20% to repay the loan promptly on a weekly basis to grant me an opportunity to access more loans from ZIDISHA lenders.
