About Me

I'm a former staff for the ministry of agriculture, first employed as an agricultural officer on July 1, 1991. As an agricultural officer, I was assigned the duty to train farmers on better farming methods to increase the produce in the region. I loved the job, I visited several farms and organized trainings for different groups of farmers. This gave me extensive knowledge to what I had learnt in college. Five years working as an agricultural officer, I decided to resign and work independently. I had a land that I had bought in Kangundo, Machakos that was unutilized as I lived in Nairobi with my wife and children. I decided to move permanently to Kangundo where I built my home, and started my farming activities. I planted once, but will harvest for the rest of my life. My farm is the home to over three thousand mango trees, palms, pears, bananas, melons, apples, guavas, passions, oranges, green and purple grapes, berries, peppers, among others. The sun is hot in Kangundo, and I use this hot sun as a blessing, as my produce, especially the mangoes turn out to be sweet. With increasing production, I have faced tough challenges among them poor farming soils, lack of ready market for the fruits, and loss due to poor storage facilities, poor harvesting and packaging methods. I have managed to use fertilizers to improve the soil when planting, and also employed ten workers to help with picking and packaging.

My Business

Over the last three years, I have observed an increase in mango produce being the main activity earning me money. Picking the ripe fruits by hand has also created jobs in the region as I have ten workers so far. I expect to employ more when I set up a mango processing plant to serve my farm produce and benefit other mango farmers in the area. When I set up this processing plant, I will not have to take my produce to nairobi for processing. Other farmers will benefit too, as the produce will be processed in my farm, and the finished product sold and transported to other parts of the country.

Loan Proposal

With the plans to set up a processing plant in the farm, greater investment is required in effort and finance for preparation and starting the operation of the processing plant. I have hope joining zidisha money lending platform will help me fulfil my goal. I will use the loan to buy a mango juice processing machines. This will make the work easier for me and my fellow mango fruit producers in the region, and increase both quality and quantity of the produce.
