About Me

My name is Jane Wanja, born in Central region of Kenya. I later went to school in the same area up to secondary school. I later relocated to Mombasa in search of a job. I briefly worked for a fisheries company and later decided to start my own business after attending a short course in hair care.

I am a single mother with two children, a daughter aged 21 years and in college and a son aged 16 who is in secondary school.

I earn my living by running a hair salon that is located in Mombasa town. I am a hard working, resilient, honest and ambitious woman. I survived in the hostile world of business for many years due to the above qualities.

My Business

My business deals with hair dressing and related beauty work such as pedicure and manicure.

I also make a sell washing detergents on a small scale to supplement my income.

I make an average net income of about $280 from the business activities. I would like to expand my detergent making department if I get funding.

I normally produce about 20 liters per week of cleaning detergent which is way below the demand of my clients. If I get credit I will be able to buy more raw materials to enable me double the production hence increase my sales and profitability.

Loan Proposal

My business has experienced tremendous growth ever since I joined Zidisha last year. This has attracted many clients to my beauty salon and some have requested me to take my services closer to them by opening a new branch. This will also ease congestion at my current space which is too small to accommodate the surging crowd.

If loaned, I will spend this money to open a new branch on the other side of town. My budget for this ambitious project is as follows:

1. Rent deposit and lease agreement (a requirement when one is moving into new premises) $300

2. Branding, Renovation and fixtures $250

3. Licence from the local government $150

4. Basic equipment and products to start off the work $100

I will use some equipment in my current salon as I wait for the business to grow.

This will be a major milestone in by business journey as it has potential to double my profit since I intend to open the new branch in a very busy area of the town where success is almost guaranteed.

I wish to reduce my weekly repayment to Ksh. 100.00. I have been unwell and I am yet to resume my duties fully. I need time to regain my health and during this time, I kindly request to be allowed to pay this modest amount. I will resume to repaying more very soon.

My budget for starting a new branch went above my estimates due to some unforeseen expenses. I am now doing the final touches and hopefully the new establishment will be up and running in the next one month. In the meantime, I wish to adjust my repayment to KES 500 since this is what I can afford for now. I ask for you understanding on this matter. Thank you.

Dear lenders, please do not let this loan expire. For those who have lent me before, you know my track record and I will maintain the same when loaned for the third time. For those other lenders, please take time and have a look at my repayment history. Thank you.

I have just completed repaying my second loan. I managed to expand my business by buying stock of beauty products for my salon and this brought a lot of convenience to my customers. I stopped making frequent visits to the stores since I have everything under one roof.

Dear lenders, I am sorry I my plan did work as expected. I have now slowed down my payments to KES 3,000 per week due to unavoidable circumstances. I am still focused on attaining my dream and I hope to clear the remaining balance in three weeks time.

Thank you and I ask for your understanding.

I am very grateful to Zidisha for giving me this credit line. This has seen my business grow in a way I had not imagined. I am now planning to open another salon in a different area but in the same town. I need to clear this loan and then apply for a bigger one so as to implement my plan

My business is a bit low at the moment due to sporadic riots in Mombasa town. I hope to recover soon and resume to my original figure. I ask for your understanding please.
Apart from this low period, I have been experiencing good business as shown in my weekly repayments. I am looking forward to clearing this loan and applying for even a bigger one next year. Thank you.

    Dear Lenders,

Due to a data entry error, a payment from Jane on November 21st was entered multiple times erroneously. Once this error is fixed in our system, the funds in your lender accounts will decrease accordingly. We apologize for this error and any inconvenience it causes you!

    Thank you,
    Bayle, Country Liaison Manager
