About Me

I am Margaret Sumara, the last born in a family of twelve. I am a widow to the late Benard Mudare. I hail from Bendera village, Chavakali location, Sabatia constituency, Vihiga county in Kenya. I went to Vohovole Primary School up to class eight. I couldn't continue with education for lack of school fees.

After the demise of my only breadwinner, my husband, I found myself in dire poverty until when my friend advised me to venture in pig farming. My brother bought me five piglets to start with. I worked hard to feed and bring these piglets to maturity before disposing and remaining with only two for breeding. This farming has grown to the current number of fifteen pigs, which will be ready for disposal in two months' time. The land around here is so fertile that everything can sprout and grow to maturity. In relation to my farming activity, it is believed that pigs have 'power' to keep bad omens away, hence a better business to me as they scramble for the few pigs that I have at a time.

My four children wish to become pilots, a teacher and a farmer. My hobby is listening to conquerors and listening to gospel music.

My Business

My business, which the main source of my income, is pig rearing and selling them for slaughter. I also sell young piglets to those willing to purchase.

Pigs are on demand in this area due to high number of pork butcheries and many people are using pock to prepare sausages. Others value pock with the belief that those who use it rarely get bad omens from the dark world (witchcraft).

I chose this kind of business because it is easy to start and needs very little expertise to run. Also, many farmers in this area are yet to discover this booming business from the sale of pigs. Their droplets are very good in improving the soil ph and general fertilization of land for growing of crops. On a good day, I sell a grown up pig at five thousand Kenya shillings (55.50 US dollars) where as a piglet goes at Ksh. 1,000 (11 US dollars). I use the profits to reinvest in my business, educate my children and feed my family.

Loan Proposal

If granted the loan, I intend to use it to invest in a new breed of pigs called Large White, which is well favored in this area and, other than fast maturity, has good weight, hence a better selling price.

66 US dollars will be used to purchase the new breed piglets, while 33.5 US dollars will be used to purchase vaccines and other medication for an enhanced maturity and production. This purchase and re-investing in this high-yielding new breed will give me better profits, of which I project one grown pig to sell at 66.60 US dollars and a piglet to sell at 27.80 US dollars.
