About Me

My name is Simple Simon Macharia, an IT guy with great interest in agriculture. I am passionate about technology and agriculture. 12 years ago, I realised that my salary is not the way to financial independence and decided to venture into business. I started off with a small cyber cafe and computer repair business where i employed 2 people. A few years later, was able to venture into distributing internet service via wireless networks. I ran the business for around 7 years while still attending college but later sold the business to fund college and restrategise after the birth of my first son. I also got a full time job in a small telecommunications company but the desire to be in business still consumed me.I then decided to venture into farming with a focus on poultry keeping after realising the huge deficiency in supply of eggs and meat presented a business oportunity.

My Business

I have a full time job as a network engineer but my business is farming. I have a small farm in Embu, Kenya where I keep a few goats and cows, grow sunflower and raise chicken. I currently have 650 layers and looking to grow the number to 2000 by end of the year. In addition to the layers, i have about 35 goats and 4 cows under the care of 2 hired farmhands. Due to the huge demand for eggs, i buy eggs from other farmers to add to the 120 trays of eggs that we produce in a week. I currently sell 300 trays a week and the demand is still high so i still need to add more chicken.

Loan Proposal

This loan is primarily intended to contribute to a future higher limit. I will use it to purchase feeds for my chicken but more importantly, I want to maintain my 100% repayment record so I can access a larger loan that will enable me to build an extra poultry house.

I have been trying to reduce to a lower and more manageable amount but the system is only allowing me a minimum of 1128 and only for 2 installments. In the meantime, I am still working towards clearing in full

Good evening zidisha community. I apologise for the delay in repaying my loan. The death of my chicken totally destabilized my finances but I will keep at it. In the meantime, the system only offers me the chance to reduce 2 installments and a minimum amount of 1128. It no longer gives lower figures or greater number of installments

I am still having a challenge rescheduling payments. I am only seeing 2 installment amounts and only allowed to reschedule 2 payments at a time.

Hello community, after the loss of most of my new chicks, the surviving 70 have not yet started laying eggs. I expect them to start production in mid December when they will have attained the age of 4.5 weeks. In the meantime, I am struggling to repay from other income sources although it has been a challenge. I am confident that from end of December, I will get back on schedule.

Good afternoon zidisha community? I have been irregular in making my payments. As I had earlier posted, I faced a challenge due to the quality of feeds and disease. Currently, 81 of the original 527 chicks are alive and well and will be in production from December. Despite having a contract that obliged me to use the dealer's feeds, after the nasty experience and the immediate improvement after changing feeds, going forward I will stick to only commercial feeds from unga or pembe limited.

Good morning members, as I continue with the new flock, I am still battling high mortality and feeding expenses. This means virtually no income from the farm as I am also not milking cows. I hope to be in a better position soon. I apologize for the late repayments but I will keep trying my best.

Good afternoon zidisha, as I have previously shared, the first 5 months of chicken rearing are very capital intensive and no income comes in before the 5th month when they begin to lay eggs. I am however using the income from the dairy cattle to make my loan repayments and it is lower than the income from the hens. I will however be able to recover soon. Thank you.

Good morning zidisha community. The period from March 2020 has been extremely challenging due to the covid pandemic. While initially, my poultry business was unaffected, towards the end of 2020, I had a disease outbreak that wiped out most of my flock. Due to the logistical challenges of the pandemic, the restriction of movement prevented access to the farm for a while. There has also been an ongoing shortage of day old chicks that we use to restock our layer flocks. Waiting lists stretched out to as much as 9 months. However, I will finally receive my batch of new chicks on the 30th of July and the journey to rebuilding has commenced.

I am trying my best to clear the loan even if I have not managed to get back in business. The recovery is slow but I will get there.
