My name is Joyce Wangui Murigu and I come from Nyeri county, central Kenya, but I am currently doing business in Mombasa County. I was born in a family of 6 where I am the third born. I am 32 years old and a single mother of one daughter, aged 6 years. I went to primary school and later to secondary school where I did my KCSE in 2003. I deal with mobile phone accessories where I operate a store in Mombasa town.
I am a hardworking person and I have worked my way up to where I am now. My aim is to provide for my young daughter and my aging parents back home. I intend to expand my business into a bigger store and hopefully start selling mobile phones as well.
I deal with mobile phone accessories, and my products range from phone skins and earphones to batteries and chargers. These products are in high demand in Mombasa, especially with the youth. I normally source these items from the capital city Nairobi, where I buy on wholesale and then I retail them. My ultimate goal is to make a trip outside the county when the business grows and get them from the source market.
I normally make about $350.00 after all expenses are paid. I have employed one worker who runs errands for me and serves as an attendant when we are very busy. I have always wanted to expand my business, but lack of credit has been a hindrance to my plans. By joining Zidisha, I hope to get the much-needed credit for my business expansion.
As mentioned above, I branched off from mobile phone business to farming. This new venture promised better returns than what I was doing before. I do my farming on a 1½ acre piece of land.
I am currently preparing land for plating of Irish potatoes and tomatoes which do very well in this region and there is a ready market for the same.
With this money, I will spend USD 100 to buy the seeds and land preparation. I will use a further USD 110 for pesticides and fertilizer. I will use the remaining balance for labor and other miscellaneous expenses.
I also do dairy farming and I have two milk producing cows. I will use the money from sale of milk to service this loan as I wait for the crop to mature.
