My name is esther. I am 24 years old, a single mother of 1 daughter. I was born in Nakuru County, Mwireri village as a forth born in a family of 8 siblings. I come from a humble family and after clearing my primary education my parents could not afford to take me to secondary school.
I started working as house help for other people to help financially assist my family. I saved money for 8 years and I managed to pay the fees at Njoro polytechnic where I trained on tailoring and dress making.
After finishing my course, life gave me a surprise. I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter. I could not tell my parents and that is where my real problems began. I was constantly fighting with my mum and soon after giving birth I moved from my parents home to my aunt's place. My aunt helped me start a tailoring business. She rented out a room for me, purchased a sewing machine and a few dress making materials.
I have moved out from my aunt's home and now rent a house for myself. I take care of my daughter and I am happy that she can grow up in peace. I also support my parents after they lost their house during the post-election violence.
I would love to expand my business and own several fleets of businesses in various towns.
My business involves making of new dresses, repairing the old ones and making school uniforms on order. I started this business 5 years ago as a way of generating income to support my daughter and myself.
The biggest challenge is lack of an interlocking machine. As a result, I have to take to my neighbours for finishing.
This business has also been affected by the lucrative 'MITUMBA' clothes business - businesses that sell second hand clothing donated by wealthier countries. Many people prefer to buy second hand clothes to new ones.
My customers are mainly women, and schools. I would love to expand my business and scale it up to other regions. This will translate to more income.
I will use the money to buy an interlocking machine and dress making fabrics. With the machine I will be able to get more work from customers and get more income. I will use the income to repay the loan and expand my business
