i am a mother of two, a son and a daughter. my first born son just completed his primary education and he is joining high school this year. my daughter, my last born is in class six. bringing up children in nairobi is not easy because life is a bit expensive. therefore i run a personal business to help manage the situation and give my children a worthwhile lifestyle. i also work at food production company called frigoken in my neighborhood. i grew up in the village and after my secondary education i moved to Nairobi to start my own life away from the parents. the salary from the job i was doing was not enough so i decided to do something else to raise enough income. coming up with the business idea was not that hard because i have many talents. i started making earrings, bangles, shoe decorations and necklaces for my neighbors and today it has grown into a great business.
as mentioned earlier i make ornaments either earrings, necklaces, or shoe decorations depending on the clients orders. the items are always in demand because people always need decorations all around the year. i chose this kind of business because it allows me to work and still manage my family at the same time being a mother and a wife. additionally, this kind of business enables me to touch the lives of those young people mostly living in the slum areas of Nairobi. i have taught a group of young people how to make these items and this gives them a purpose rather than to stay on the streets. in fact, some kids have been able to pay their school fees and buy books from the items they help me make since most of their parents are not able. the costs i incur in my business include the costs for purchasing the leather and beads as well as the payments i give to those young people who assist me to make the ornaments. i use some of the profit from my business to pay schools fees for my children and the rest i reinvest in the business.
i intend to expand my operations by owning the entire production of the ornaments and the distribution of the same. for that to happen i need to be able to buy more beads and leather that i use to create the items. additionally, i also need to rent a place where i can operate from since currently i only work from home. with my new projections i will be able to raise a profit of about 200dolars a month which will be of great heap especially with my son going to high school. the expansion of this business in the above mentioned terms will enable me achieve my dream of becoming a recognized artist as well as touch the lives of the young people within my locality. therefore any financial assistance will be highly appreciated.
