About Me

PERSONAL PROFILE AND INFO.
My name is Bornface Odhiambo Omallah, am a Luhya by ethnicity. The luhya community belongs to the Eastern Bantu of Kenya. Am a second child in a family of 9 children, currently 8 are alive. We lost our last born among our sisters this year in January. I’m married with 3 children - 2 boys and a daughter aged 9, 7 and 3 years respectively. My first born daughter is in class 3 while second born boy in class 2. The last born boy is yet to join pre unit early next year.
My parents retreated to our rural home in Budalangi (Busia County) after my dad’s retirement. My dad worked with Kenya railways until he retired in 2002. Currently I live in Kisumu. Kisumu is the Third City in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. It is situated along the Lake Victoria region in the Nile belt. In Kisumu I live in Manyatta approximately 5 kilometers from the Central Business District. Manyatta is considered third largest area of informal settlement / slum in Kisumu after Obunga and Nyalenda.
My occupation is a marketer; I did my primary level education at Kudho primary school in Kisumu County, I proceeded to Kisumu Day High School for my O levels and later joined Eldoret Polytechnic for a diploma in Business Administration course. I have done a certificate course in computer application and packages at Kenyatta University and have extensive knowledge in computer networking and maintenance
Due to limited jobs and the short durations they live, I started a business to help me manage my expenditures, take care of my parents at home and educate my brothers and sisters. Currently 2 of my brother are in college while another in high school.
My main areas of expenditure are: my business raw materials like, cartridges, pigments, inks, rims of papers, school fees for my brother, maintenance of my parents at home, my household expenditure in the family.

My Business

BUSINESS PROFILE.
My business is registered as marbles technologies and dimensions under the business name act of Kenya under the attorney general chambers. It’s a print shop. I decided to register my business name legally so that it would give me opportunity to grow it even to a registered company in the fullness of time. I also registered the business with an intention of participating in the tendering system of the government since 10 % of government tenders are reserved to young entrepreneurs and the youth. We offer the following services.
i. Typesetting services,
We do typesetting services for proposals, student’s projects and thesis’s. We also undertake major client to client jobs for customers who drop in for various services including typing services and typesetting.
ii. Printing services
We undertake printing services done through offset printers. We make receipt books, business cards n programmes for various churches, funeral programmes, wedding cards and various pamphlets.
iii. Photocopying services
We do photocopying services to our clients. However, we only manage small jobs since we use the 3 in 1 printer. We cannot service large orders since it’s expensive to use cartridge for photocopying. With adequate funds we plan to purchase a copier and copy printer to help use manage our business to optimum profitability.
iv. Screen printing of T-shirts, badges, ties, and other textiles
We do printing of T-shirts and different types of textiles. We look for orders from groups who need uniforms, institutions and event organizers. We develop banners and various tags and even managed signposts.
We typeset proposals and projects for students, we make receipt books, office stationeries like letters heads, envelops.
I have a computer and a 3 in one printer. I use it for printing, scanning and photocopying. I also develop screens for printing of textiles like T-shirts, badges and ties.
My business is located next to Lake Institute of Tropical Medicine area along St. Theresa’s Catholic Church next to avenue health care Hospital.
Our Competition
Our main competitors are similar print shops around where we are situated, large printing press and well developed businesses in the same field. They give us great competition since they are a one stop print shop where a customer access all services including typesetting, scanning, laminations, cyber cafes and press. They stock different kinds of papers including, Bond, Bank, Embossed, Ivory, Newsprints and other forms of papers and various tools. However we manage to keep our customers through quality and timeliness of services. Our customized services targeted to our customers include giving them free advice on cost reduction and offering efficient services to them.
Profitability ratios
Our business is a pre calculated one where we make pre defined profits. i.e. typesetting for a 1 page document cost Kshs. 30.00 (Kshs. 80 = 1 USD ) while printing is Kshs. 10.00. We are able to make the approximately Kshs. 25.00 gross profits. Thus once we mobilize good business and the correct equipments in place, ours is a profitable business.
In the printing of T-shirts, apart from the direct cost of purchase of t-shirts within mainstream shops, we make approximately 70 % profits after subtraction of costs for preparing screens and costs for colors and pigments.
Risks
Major risks involved in the business include rejected products by the customer. This happens when a customers schedules and job continuation orders before verifying the draft only to eject the final product. We try to ensure that the draft is verified by customers and even at certain incidences have to travel to ensure the customers verifies the draft and gives a go ahead order.
Other risks include liquidity risk, this include having to shelve large / big orders often leading to loosing customers and projecting an image of inadequacy which may imply lack of capacity. We also at times have to co-share certain jobs due to lack of equipments.
We have another risk of inconsistencies in the by-laws of municipality and city council of Kisumu, which at times leads to demolition of properties and hiking or rates for doing business in town.
Costs, sales revenue and profits
Our monthly costs approximation includes the following:
Business rents Kshs. 3500.00
Electricity Kshs. 1000.00
Water Kshs. 500.00
Operating License Kshs. 400.00
Security Kshs. 500.00

Other costs of the business include monthly business stocks involving purchase materials like papers inks and the costs of servicing orders which vary.
Our sales are revenues are able to cover our expenditures, the challenge is we make very minimal profits due to lack of adequate equipments and sound financial base. Often we share our jobs with our neighbors due to lack of capacity and believe once we attain a sound liquidity and financial base our business will break even.
