About Me

PERSONAL PROFILE AND INFO.
My name is Bornface Odhiambo Omallah, am a Luhya by ethnicity. The luhya community belongs to the Eastern Bantu of Kenya. Am a second child in a family of 9 children, currently 8 are alive. We lost our last born among our sisters this year in January. I’m married with 3 children - 2 boys and a daughter aged 9, 7 and 3 years respectively. My first born daughter is in class 3 while second born boy in class 2. The last born boy is yet to join pre unit early next year.
My parents retreated to our rural home in Budalangi (Busia County) after my dad’s retirement. My dad worked with Kenya railways until he retired in 2002. Currently I live in Kisumu. Kisumu is the Third City in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. It is situated along the Lake Victoria region in the Nile belt. In Kisumu I live in Manyatta approximately 5 kilometers from the Central Business District. Manyatta is considered third largest area of informal settlement / slum in Kisumu after Obunga and Nyalenda.
My occupation is a marketer; I did my primary level education at Kudho primary school in Kisumu County, I proceeded to Kisumu Day High School for my O levels and later joined Eldoret Polytechnic for a diploma in Business Administration course. I have done a certificate course in computer application and packages at Kenyatta University and have extensive knowledge in computer networking and maintenance
Due to limited jobs and the short durations they live, I started a business to help me manage my expenditures, take care of my parents at home and educate my brothers and sisters. Currently 2 of my brother are in college while another in high school.
My main areas of expenditure are: my business raw materials like, cartridges, pigments, inks, rims of papers, school fees for my brother, maintenance of my parents at home, my household expenditure in the family.

My Business

BUSINESS PROFILE.
My business is registered as marbles technologies and dimensions under the business name act of Kenya under the attorney general chambers. It’s a print shop. I decided to register my business name legally so that it would give me opportunity to grow it even to a registered company in the fullness of time. I also registered the business with an intention of participating in the tendering system of the government since 10 % of government tenders are reserved to young entrepreneurs and the youth. We offer the following services.
i. Typesetting services,
We do typesetting services for proposals, student’s projects and thesis’s. We also undertake major client to client jobs for customers who drop in for various services including typing services and typesetting.
ii. Printing services
We undertake printing services done through offset printers. We make receipt books, business cards n programmes for various churches, funeral programmes, wedding cards and various pamphlets.
iii. Photocopying services
We do photocopying services to our clients. However, we only manage small jobs since we use the 3 in 1 printer. We cannot service large orders since it’s expensive to use cartridge for photocopying. With adequate funds we plan to purchase a copier and copy printer to help use manage our business to optimum profitability.
iv. Screen printing of T-shirts, badges, ties, and other textiles
We do printing of T-shirts and different types of textiles. We look for orders from groups who need uniforms, institutions and event organizers. We develop banners and various tags and even managed signposts.
We typeset proposals and projects for students, we make receipt books, office stationeries like letters heads, envelops.
I have a computer and a 3 in one printer. I use it for printing, scanning and photocopying. I also develop screens for printing of textiles like T-shirts, badges and ties.
My business is located next to Lake Institute of Tropical Medicine area along St. Theresa’s Catholic Church next to avenue health care Hospital.
Our Competition
Our main competitors are similar print shops around where we are situated, large printing press and well developed businesses in the same field. They give us great competition since they are a one stop print shop where a customer access all services including typesetting, scanning, laminations, cyber cafes and press. They stock different kinds of papers including, Bond, Bank, Embossed, Ivory, Newsprints and other forms of papers and various tools. However we manage to keep our customers through quality and timeliness of services. Our customized services targeted to our customers include giving them free advice on cost reduction and offering efficient services to them.
Profitability ratios
Our business is a pre calculated one where we make pre defined profits. i.e. typesetting for a 1 page document cost Kshs. 30.00 (Kshs. 80 = 1 USD ) while printing is Kshs. 10.00. We are able to make the approximately Kshs. 25.00 gross profits. Thus once we mobilize good business and the correct equipments in place, ours is a profitable business.
In the printing of T-shirts, apart from the direct cost of purchase of t-shirts within mainstream shops, we make approximately 70 % profits after subtraction of costs for preparing screens and costs for colors and pigments.
Risks
Major risks involved in the business include rejected products by the customer. This happens when a customers schedules and job continuation orders before verifying the draft only to eject the final product. We try to ensure that the draft is verified by customers and even at certain incidences have to travel to ensure the customers verifies the draft and gives a go ahead order.
Other risks include liquidity risk, this include having to shelve large / big orders often leading to loosing customers and projecting an image of inadequacy which may imply lack of capacity. We also at times have to co-share certain jobs due to lack of equipments.
We have another risk of inconsistencies in the by-laws of municipality and city council of Kisumu, which at times leads to demolition of properties and hiking or rates for doing business in town.
Costs, sales revenue and profits
Our monthly costs approximation includes the following:
Business rents Kshs. 3500.00
Electricity Kshs. 1000.00
Water Kshs. 500.00
Operating License Kshs. 400.00
Security Kshs. 500.00

Other costs of the business include monthly business stocks involving purchase materials like papers inks and the costs of servicing orders which vary.
Our sales are revenues are able to cover our expenditures, the challenge is we make very minimal profits due to lack of adequate equipments and sound financial base. Often we share our jobs with our neighbors due to lack of capacity and believe once we attain a sound liquidity and financial base our business will break even.

I thank all my lenders for the last loan. It has moved up my business to better level. I also continue to struggle with my repayment percentage that got messed up last year due to the death of my elder brother. I undertake to continue ensuring am up to date with my repayments.

The last loan helped me to differentiate to another business line of selling Day Old Kuroiler chicks which I get from Lugazi in Uganda our neighbor Country.

this new venture sell well since I purchase chicks at Kshs. 70.00 (USD 0.83) and sell them a month later for Kshs. 250.00. (USD 2.95) I intend to venture full scale in this business even as my print shop continues to operate. I trust in your support.

I once more thank you soo very much and may Gods favor be always upon all of you

    Dear all,

Yesterday I met Bornface Omallah at one of the petrol stations close to the main market in Kisumu. Each of us took one of the bicycle taxis (widespread in Kisumu) through the main market. There were stands aligning all the streets and people walking around bargaining and arguing. We went further and further out of the main areas and as we reached the outskirts we arrived at Bornface’s stall, a print and computer service shop.

Bornface tells me that the current location was not the original one. In the beginning of the year they were situated much closer to the center of the market, however, the landowner of that stall decided to upgrade the stalls (building small places out of cement rather than using wood and iron sheets), which lead to a doubling of the rent! Bornface could not accept this and decided to move out. His current location is, luckily, close to a school, which is where most of his customers come from. He has one person employed, called Fred, but rather than calling him an employee he sees Fred as his partner and hopes that as the business grows Fred would join him and help him to make the business more profitable and diverse.

Bornface is also currently opening a new stall in another part of the market. The rent is slightly more expensive, however not as expensive as the original stall. This stall is also made out of cement and makes the business look very professional. I personally met the landowner and he ensured me that by the end of the week Bornface would be able to move in and open his shop. This enables Bornface to have 2 shops simultaneously which hopefully would give him a much better income. He has already contacted a girl that would be willing to work for him and could then be stationed in the new shop.

On a typical day Bornface walks around and tries to find jobs for his print shop, while Fred is stationed in the shop itself. Being in the business for quite a while now and knowing many people and organisations in Kisumu makes it increasingly easier for Bornface to find jobs for his business. Bornface’s future looks bright. His business seems to be prospering and his income gradually increasing. However, just a couple of months ago that was not the case. Due to mismanagement at his former workplace, a microfinance company, many people had to be fired, Isiah unfortunately being one of them. For a prolonged period he was living from hand to mouth, barely being able to provide for himself and his family. “It really brings you down when you cannot provide well for your own family. You feel guilty and sad, and try every little thing to improve the situation.” He tells me with a sad look on his face.

However, Bornface had heard of Kiva and desperately looking for money he looked for microcredit companies online. Zidisha came up, and intrigued by the Swahili name he entered, registered himself, and quickly sent out a loan proposal. After only three days his loan was raised, but only when he received a sms saying that the money had been transferred to his bank account did he believe it was true. Since then things have improved dramatically. With his first loan he purchased a printer. With the second he managed to buy a scanner and another printer, and with the third he managed to buy a minicopier, which enables him to offer a range of different services. Profit has increased drastically and with a big smile he tells me: “You know, it’s just an incredible feeling when you can offer your children meat once or twice a week, when you know you will be able to pay your rent and can ensure that your children attend school. It just makes the day so much brighter!” I didn’t say anything, I just smiled, but to myself I thought: “I cannot claim to know that feeling, but it must be absolutely wonderful…”

    Client Relationship Manager, Kenya

Thank so much to the zidisha team and my lenders for funding me and giving me an opportunity to develop my business dream.
We have finished burying Our brother and the rite that goes with it.
I am now back to kisumu with my family. I tried so much not to use my capital and business proceeds for the funeral arrangements. My friends and church members helped me a lot in this.m I now look forward to Complete my Loan and apply for a new one to move my business up further.
I believe I, myself with You, am sorted and my future and that of my family and brother children is bright.
    Asante Sana!

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this act will and is causing my funders and zidisha as a whole.

I also undertake to clear my loan a little more earlier. thanks you so much and God bless you!

Thanks so much for your interest. Things are so hard way back home. the living standards have gone up the and cost of living is hiking day by day.

However about the Loan, we did some work for a local school around when their machines broke down, but at the point of payment we realized there was a change of management through the p[posting of a new headmaster. we have been advised to give them time as they work on changing bank signatories and the processes of the ministry. once this is sorted out I intend to settle all my arrears and continue with my normal schedule.

I believe this should take just a few 2 more weeks. I however make the repayment through the small business sources. this job ate into a better part of our operating capital.

I undertake to settle the arrears in under two week and continue with my normal schedule.
Thank you very much for you continued support.

    Mr. Omallah,

How are you doing? Have things improved for you? I hope there have been no other raids by the government.

I see that you invited Mr. Julius Ondoro to join Zidisha. Do you know him well? How long have you known him? I hope you don't mind my asking, but since I've been burned recently by some new lenders that nobody seems to know, I just want to be extra careful if I decide to lend to him.

    Thank you,
    Cris

The county council of Kisumu yester night demolished our business stalls arnd the avenue hospital newly built. The demolition occured in the early morning. our equipment were vandalized and stolen with thieves who took advantage of the situation. I managed to get my printer n table while my computer was stolen. for this reason I request a two months grace period to bring myself back to my feet. I also undrtake to still try and make my repayments even earlier than my due date. thanks so much for your understanding.
