My name is Naomi Hadelema. I a married woman with two children. I grew up in a small village in rural Siavonga, where my parents used to rear cattle and grow millet and maize.
Growing up in rural Siavonga I used to help my parents to plough the field. My parents used the money raised from selling millet and maize to feed us and to educate us.
After completing Grade 12, I married a good man from the village close to ours and we settled down in the urban part of Siavonga and began to raise a family. I managed to find a piece of land close to the lakeshore where I grow vegetables. In the beginning I used to rent the land, until the landlord offered to sell me the piece of land. Now I own the piece of land and I sell the vegetables I grow to individuals, shops and restaurants. I also own a stand in the market where I sell the vegetables.
I have overcome hardship by growing various types of vegetables on the piece of land. I grow cabbages, tomatoes, spinach and okra. I use the money I raise from selling vegetables to look after and feed my family. I am so happy with my achievement!
What is unique about my town is that most of it is covered by Lake Kariba which is the source of water for our daily livelihood and also for electricity generation and fishing.
I want my children to have lots of cattle and to own their own piece of land. We are proud of our cattle and our culture which teaches the respect for elders and to value our land.
My hobbies are singing and dancing.
I am a small scale farmer and I grow various types of vegetables on my field. I love to see things grow and to water my field. This season I have planted Cabbages, Spinach and Okra. I sell the vegetables to individuals, shops and restaurants in Siavonga town.
I plan to buy a 2 HP Honda Water Pump to water my vegetable field.
My field is close to the lake and a water pump will help me to be able to expand my vegetable field and harvest my tomatoes which are close to be harvested.
I have a water tank and some poly pipes, however, I use my friend's water pump to water my vegetable field. The pump is not reliable and it is often busy.
This is why I would like to have my own water pump. When my yield increases, my income will also increase. I will use the income to pay off my loan and to look after myself and my family.
I sell my vegetables at the market. The markets are full of customers looking to buy fresh vegetables and fish. My business is doing well. Due to COVID 19 people are observing social distancing and washing of hands with soap and hand sanitizers.
