My name is Marion Nyawira from Meru County. Meru is in the slopes of the snow-capped Mount Kenya and it is a very cold area. The community around here does farming, mainly coffee and other food crops. I was born and raised in a family of 6 and I am the second last born.
Like other children in the family, I was taken to primary and later secondary school for my education. I did not proceed with academics after that. I got married but my husband became very abusive after the birth of our first child until I decided to quit the marriage. With the harsh life staring at me, I rented a small house and made a simple structure which I use as a restaurant where I sell meals to the locals.
I run a simple restaurant where I sell food to the local community. My clients are mostly construction laborers who normally come to my establishment for a quick bite during their work breaks. A simple meal of maize and beans cost about half a dollar.
I make about $12 a day and $5 goes into expenses and I use the balance to support my child with his daily needs. My desire is to construct a better structure where I can prepare the food in a hygienic way and get better chairs and tables.
I am glad my business has grown in the last couple of months - thanks to Zidisha's financial support. The growth however has come with some challenges key among them is increased number of clients. The makeshift eatery was made with a capacity to serve only 8 people at a time. This capacity has proved inadequate and I need to buy more seats and a tables to double the capacity. This will cost me about USD 100.
The joint has also attracted a different class of people. I started the place with the low income clients in mind but to my pleasant surprise, it is now attracting the 'middle' class too like teachers and other professionals. For this reason, I would like to give it a facelift so as to match the class of these new clients. This will entail a fresh coat of paint and better serving dishes. This will cost me about USD 100.
Thank you for taking time to read my story and kindly consider lending me as I travel this journey of success!
