About Me

I am an upcoming Social Entrepreneur. I completed my Bcs. in Community development in 2012, with vast experiences from short term contracts from different NGO’s. I come from a family of 6 siblings, being the 1st male child. My dad is a retired Agricultural Development Cooperation farm manager, who now does small scale subsistence farming. That leaves mum as the main family income earner as civil servant in the ministry of agriculture. With loans between them they have managed to take the 6 of us to college/university with our lastborn set to join high school next year.
My home area is in Watamu location of Malindi Sub-county, Kilifi County. This area is a metropolis in nature as its one of the popular tourist destinations in Kenya. Tourism industry has brought a lot of good development, which is subject for another story, but at the same time impacted negatively on the lifestyle and general culture of the natives. Over the years most youth prefer to drop out of school in pursuit of ‘easy’ way out of poverty by getting engaged and marrying international tourists. A few have actually got lucky and made a comfortable life out of this but a larger percentage end up in disappointments, with the extreme ending up in prostitution and/or drug abuse.
Due to this high school dropout rate that we formed Gede Community Development Initiative (GedeCDI) with the aim of mentoring students to remain in class as we talk on the importance of education. Apart from this I am interning with Digital Opportunity Trust – Kenya with the main mandate of educating youth out of school on ICT and its use in community development and teaching basic business skills. At my free time I am an aspiring and active member of the Rotary Club of Kilifi.

My Business

Currently my main source of income is my intern allowance. Of which I can comfortably pay up to four thousand shillings (4000) per month. That is 1000 per week. I am a partner in a cereals shop business venture that has a potential of growing into a large income provider. I also have a family photocopy business. Being that they are all in Gede my home town and I am in Kilifi, about 60km away. And that my partner is also working. Naturally we have to employ people to maintain daily operations of the 2 businesses while my partner checks the accounts every evening and I check them every weekend. This means salary for the 2 employees plus the high rent prices of stalls in Gede totals to very high overhead expenses per month that doesn’t allow for the business to grow. The best solution is to cut the excessive expenditure. My dad owns a plot about three meters squared at the Gede shopping center, that he has agreed to give me if I can build a stall and use it for my businesses. This is what I aim to use the loans to build the stalls. When complete I shall have the 2 businesses under 1 roof and one employee, which shall save us an average of Fifteen thousand shillings (15000) every month. This shall go a long way in reinvesting in the businesses and growing them.
After this I intend to get more loans which I shall be investing in Agriculture on our twelve (12) acre fertile land. Fifty percent (50%) proceeds from this shall go to funding our CBO Gede CDI. This way I shall have fulfilled my Social Entrepreneur dream.

Loan Proposal

I intend to finance the building of a stall to house our 2 businesses in order to reduce overhead expenses and increase profit. After the construction is complete I intend to begin agriculture business in our family land which is sitting idol due to low rains. I intend to use irrigation based agriculture to ensure sustainable income. I shall plant vegetable to sell to the local market which demand is high in the low rain season.
