My name is Salome njeri ,i was born in 1977 in Muranga county in Kenya. My parents were peasant farmers, farming coffee and tea, through their dedication and sacrifice they were able to educate us albeit with struggle. We were eleven siblings and i am the 10th born.
The greatest challenge in our school days for a young girl like me was how to be focused and be able to finish school, many girls were getting pregnant barely hitting adolescent,and thus dropping out of school.It is a testament to my dedication to be able to finish school still a virgin.
After my secondary education my dad passed away, and that became the end of my education, I fell in love with my geography teacher and got married. He took me home and thus another chapter of my life opened, of raising children and farming. My husband is now posted far away which makes his salary not enough due to him being far off. To be able to balance our home economy i started a business of buying one day old chicks and brooding them until they are two months old and then reselling them.
I now have three kids who l am educating as we speak the first born want to be a teacher like his dad the other two want to be doctors . this is the short story of my life
My business is home based i buy one day old chicks from established hatcheries this i then feed and brood using paraffin lamps and electricity untill they are two months old then i resell them to my customers.
Chicken meat and eggs are in high demand from the local tourist hotel in my area, local schools and people. This informed my decision to start this business.
I buy chicks in lot of 100 or 200 per demand then a summing i buy 100 chicks
100 chicks @1 USD= 100 USD
transport per lot =20USD
feeds and drugs = 50USD
electricity and
paraffin = 20USD
TOTAL COST =190 USD
Then the total cost per chick is 19USD after two months iam able to sell the chick at 40 USD which gives me a profit of of 21 USD per chick. Iuse this money to buy more chicks and assist my husband to pay for fees
with thi s amount i will buy 100 chicks and then buy feeds and drugs and keep some for electricity The total amount will come to 190 usd This will enable me to service an order for 100 chicks i have to a hotel by end of january. The profit i will get i will use to pay for my son"s fees,
