My name is Martha Kandie i was born in 1986 in Nyahera village in Kisumu North District of Kisumu County.
I did my primary education after which i proceeded to Bar Union secondary school . Upon completion of secondary education, I stayed at home up to 2013 with hopes of joining college for a nursing course, but the plans failed. I moved to Eldoret town to try another way of survival.
It was then that I joined the jua kali sector and started making and selling improved cookstoves. I have one daughter.
I look forward to growing the business to a level that I will generate enough income that will improve my livelihood and that of my family, educate my child to the highest level possible and also buy land for putting up my home.
The business faces the challenge of an ever increasing cost of production brought about by increase in prices of primary raw materials. I am therefore forced to increase the scale of production so as to level the costs.
Scaling up of production requires additional working capital. Access to capital is also is not easy due to lack of collateral required by the financial institutions. The business is good and at a times i make profits of upto $150 of which i use to expand the business and pay my daughters fees
The loan will be used to purchase raw materials(metal cladding, liners, vermiculite and cement). This may cost me upto $200 together with my savings
From this I will be able to produce additional 200 units of complete stoves a month.
This will increase my profit by $60 a month which will be generated from minimum sales of betweeen $150 - $180a month. Because of the additional capital, the business will scale up production hence lower the unit cost of production, increase profitability and serve more customers.
This increase in income will enable me feed well and invest in proper housing for the family.
