Hello all! I am a beautician based in Mombasa city where I own and run a hair and beauty salon. I came to Mombasa to work since I was born in central part of Kenya. Central Kenya is generally an agricultural area and I spent most of my childhood years helping my parents in their small farm.
I had a strong desire to do something different and that is why I decided to move to Mombasa to live with my cousin. It is while in Mombasa that I enrolled for a course in hair care and beauty. With the support of my parents and friends, I was able to start a small salon and this is where I am still working.
My business entails doing hair work such as plaiting, hair treatment and pedicure. This is my hobby turned profession since I have always wanted to become a beautician. I normally serve the working ladies though I occasionally serve college students who can afford to pay.
This salon is located in residential estate and I get a good stream of clients all the time. The main challenge I face is when my equipment break-down since this leads to loss of business. I make about USD 200 per month with slight variation upwards or downwards depending on the season.
As mentioned in my earlier post, my beauty parlor has started attracting high class clients. This has come with its own challenges because when I started, my target was low income earners. Through hard work, I have earned a good reputation in the area and that explains the change of clientele.
My structure is very basic and with some money, I can upgrade it as follows:
Partition the room into two for more privacy at a cost of $100
Buy comfortable chairs for my clients at a cost of $ 120
Fit mirrors and fix shelves at a total cost $80.
This will uplift the premises to the required level.
Thank you.
