About Zidisha Profiles Zidisha entrepreneurs write their own loan profiles and provide their own photos. English is not usually their first language, and many had to overcome great obstacles to obtain an education. Additionally, many do not have cameras and own only a small number of personal photos. As a result, the profiles are not always as polished as on other websites. To keep profiles genuine, Zidisha staff do not make any edits, with the exception of titles for clarity and English translations.

My Story

Am a university graduate, married with three children, i live in Rongai, do Rabbit farming as business, i want to be unique in rearing the rabbits i found this project to be more viable when white meat became scarce and was very expensive to buy thus causing me to start rabbit project for export market, and also local, hence using my earnings to increase my business( buy more rabbits). in my community rabbit was kept by young boys as pets

About My Business

I started this business because, its white meat, has the highest percentage of protein, its lean fat content is low, highly digestible, low cholesterol, good source of vitamin B12,few people are in rabbit farming business, hence low competition, and demand is very high, when diseases strike.Medicine, food (Hay) and pellets costs ksh 25,000
sales one rabbit ksh 500
profit for 100 rabbits is 5000

My Loan Proposal

I will buy more rabbits, buy pellets, hay, medicine and containers for drinking water,i will also buy some materials for the construction of the rabbit house, that will be lockable so that the rabbits are never disturbed by the parking dogs,i will make a trench that one has to dip her/ his legs before entering the rabbit house, this prevents any attack of the diseases.

May 11, 2013 Markus Positive Josephine Nyang'au turned out to be a model-borrower. Repayments were made in time, overall considered full repayment was done much ahead of schedule. Besides Josephine is a very active communicator (posting comments, giving updates) -so it was a pleasure to fund her project.

Ms. Nyang'au,

I'm sorry to hear about your mother's illness. I hope all is well now.

I see you are Mr. Julius Moturi's VM. He took out a loan on Feb 14, 2014, and has not been heard of since. He is now 5 weeks ($46) in arrears and has not made a single payment.

Could you please check up on him and let us know what is going on?

Thanks in advance,
Cris

JOSEPHINE NYANG'AU   Sep 11, 2013

Hello friends,
Greetings thank you very much for the support you always give me i a appreciate you very much more especially when i think that you dont know me personally but that we work on trust this satisfies me.Am back trying to make ends meet but they are not meeting but, i want to say thank you very much for understanding me,My Rabbit business is purely for export and am breeding for sale locally thats why i usually get from the center(vet) so that they have to refer customers here when they have less in the farm,as i said am doing my structure slowly because of manpower and as instructed by the officers who can take so long to come to visit.
But all in all i will make it, am encouraged by yourselves, the close contact of everyday is surely encouraging, and that you donate freely. tha tis why i say that you are welcome anytime to come and stay near here we have good hotels where you can enjoy the quiet environs of Karen( the Swara safari lodge) am sure you will enjoy it.
regards.

Hi, friends
Greetings from me and family, and many friends who want to know about what we do.am delighted to comment here that there are many people who will want to understand what zidsha does am trying to explain to them.
Iam doing fine with my Rabbits, this year of Jubillee many things seem to be happening, but am happy that i can get along with everything as it comes,my project is fine, i cant complain because everyday is a new day that am supposed to be glad in it and accept it as it comes
so far my Rabbits are fine they are increasing in no.i cant complain, and my structure am doing it at the pace that is good for me.
As i was upcountry i saw many people. The boy that i sponsor he is now in form three i will get a photo and send you to see, he come s from a home that is very vulnerable and he is a bright boy in that family, his mam is a widow with many children.I bought some Rabbits and took home but because he goes to school he missed to care for them and they died but i have not given up.
my prayer is that I introduce as many programmes as i can to keep the young people busy and that they have something to tell me when i go home here in Nairobi am doing fine.
you are welcome if you come to Nairobi-ongata Rongai
regards
Josephine

Thanks for the update! It seems like you're quite busy, so it's good you were able to take a little trip. And I'm glad the boy you're sponsoring is doing well. Even if he can't keep rabbits right now, I'm sure your support is a big help for him.

I'd like to go to Kenya someday! But right now, at least I can read your updates and those of other Zidisha members. Best wishes for your business and family,
Kirsten

Hi Josephine,

Thank you for your updates and for sharing the pictures of your family.
It is quite nice to see that you, your family and your project do well, infact quite well, following your words & descriptions.
All the Best for you and your family, God Bless,

Hello,
you are the Volunteer Mentor from Samuel Njenga. What's going on with this person. His last contact was on the Apr 13, 2013. He is many months behind his loan...!? Can you check this and post somthing about the current situation ... thx

Hi Josephine,

I am writing to you about Liverson Mjala, since you are listed as his volunteer mentor. I am a little concerned about him, since he has not posted anything and he is almost three months behind on his loan. Do you think you could check and see if he is all right?

Thank you,
KB

Hi Friends,
Greetings to all of you, i sincerely appreciate your patience and kindness unlike what other organizations will do,but this design helps me to have very high self esteem in that i don't let you down because you have helped me to have my business running, and i get encouraged every moment because for sure you assist members that you have never seen, but work on trust, this i told Traci every time we met, how amazing zidisha can be.I feel fulfilled because i know my success entirely relies on working hard with my organization,to pay promptly and to keep my Rabbit business market afloat, thats to work extra hard to market the Rabbit rearing and meat eating locally, because my findings are that local consumption is very low, i got someone from KItale who will keep Rabbits. He came to see what i have done and we are working together.
For now thank you so so much
regards
Josephine

Yes, thank you. I've received the first repayment, and I'm glad to hear things are going well. Selling live rabbits also sounds like a good plan, and maybe you can give lessons on raising them. Have a great weekend!
K.

Thank you for the update. You have our full support. We wish you all the best.

Hello friends
Greetings thanks for your concern,am happy that you are following and the concern makes me feel happy, am getting on well, though cold but am trying my best,am putting everything in order step by step so that when i send you, you are able to see what i have done .comment whether its good, or what will need improvement.so far i have settled on steel which am trying to get some personnel to do,not many people here can do the good cages so the demand for such people is high.i have booked one who told me to gather everything so that when he comes, will just do it in a week i have the camera man ready to do every stage.now am ready just waiting for him.
The cages you see are not professionally made,
But my prayer is that i get it one and for all.
So far am getting bookings for Rabbit from different organization but they are telling me to teach them first before they buy.an going round to do some training for those who need to keep rabbit.
thank you
Regards
Josephine

Hi friends,

otherwise am encouraged by what you are doing for me am extremely happy.
I like the strawberries, i wish i could get them now to eat, but unfortunately am far .Anyway
Thanks a lot and may God bless you.
regards.
Josephine

Dear Josephine,
It is always good to get your comments. I figure that you must be now very busy to set the new structure, for our expansion. We would love get some update from you as soon as it is convenient for you.

Hoping that this message finds you well and in good spirits,
All the Best, Markus

Hi friends,
Greetings, i will be sending the pictures to you once they are ready with the new structure, though the materials are ready down in the store, i have cleared the site for the structure which was taken photos by Eric a Canadian who came to see my project two days a go i will take some pictures and send to you immediately though Eric told me he share the photos which i will not mind him putting them up for you to see,Eric was a round doing a research on Micro finance.
Hi loquats are sweets fruit am salivating to eat them, though here now we have a lot of Mangoes in season,we are eating them alot and the weather is still very cold.I was affected by the cold weather but am getting better now.
I would like to thank you very much for your concern, about how am doing i like it so much, i feel good that there are people out there who care and who want more information about my venture.
Thanks

I'm glad you can get a new rabbit structure that's made of steel instead of wood. My parents' house had a wooden porch a few years ago, but they had to take it down because carpenter ants were eating holes in it!

It's also very rainy in Montreal. I have a little garden, and while I can't grow mangoes this far north, I do have some strawberries that should be ripe in a week or two. I hope the weather gets better in Nairobi as well, and I look forward to seeing your pictures when they are ready. Best wishes,

Kirsten

Hi Josephine, would love to see pictures of your rabbits and new structure! It is getting hot here in Japan and I am picking my spring fruit (loquats and gooseberries).

Hi, friends,
I will to recommend our organization for one thing the faithfulness and the willingness to give to the society to those who really need. this touches me and amazes me the way zidisha works.that we need to be totally reliable ourselves, because it is us who need the assistance, we need to humble ourselves and respect the rules and obligations that bind us with the organization, those of us who have known this a re doing pretty well but,we also pray that we don't have many defaulters.
i wish to say that am doing fine with my business of rabbit the stock is large am getting someone who understands to do my structure to the standard that i was trained, i consult the breeding centre weekly for advice.
am happy personally and wish to say that may God richly bless you as you help us never tire your cup will overflow.
Be blessed

I was impressed by the visit, to my rabbit house by Bryce and Traci, i got so encouraged by the zidisha group, monitoring and evaluation, its good because it makes one work hard and have the right things that she /he had quoted in the enterprise, its also good for the donors to know that the monies go to the right business. This made me feel great, especially that,i now know what to do exactly when dealing with the business, am also happy that i got the information from the seminar that am now practicing,i now know the importance of the mwalimu insisting that i had to come to the seminar before putting up my house for rabbit but because i was so determined idid not want someone to tell me not to have the enterprise.

JOSEPHINE NYANG'AU   Aug 24, 2012

twas nice meeting Traci, come to the seminar and test the Rabbit meat, very delicious, and this also encouraged me that the zidisha community is caring, and it is there for us so long as we put into use the resources they give us.I personally am very newcomer but have really gotten encouraged by the visitation of Traci and considering that before i got the resources i had met vivien and asked very many question that i needed to understand.Iam really encouraged.Thank you Zidisha community.
Stay blessed to helping our society.

August 23, 2012

Hello, my name is Traci Yoshiyama, Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Manager. I am currently visiting Zidisha borrowers in and around Nairobi.

Stewed rabbit, fried rabbit, grilled rabbit, roasted rabbit. As I sit with Zidisha borrower, Josephine Nyang’au, in a training seminar for rabbit breeding (current topic being ways to cook a rabbit), my mind wonders to scenes from Forrest Gump, of Bubba and his endless string of various shrimp concoctions. Upon arriving in Kenya I never imagined myself partaking in a certification course for rabbit breeding, but when presented with an invitation from Josephine, how could I decline. Being a three-day seminar, we both agreed I came on the right day, as one of the topics on today’s schedule was a hands-on lesson in meat preparation!

Although I was unable to visit her place of business, this rare opportunity granted me the chance to spend the entire day with Josephine, witness her undeniable fervor for life, and get to know this ambitious entrepreneur. The list of Josephine’s skills stretch on, for before becoming a rabbit farmer, she was a caterer, had a small embroidery business, worked for UNDP, and also volunteered as a mentor and trainer to women and youths. In 2003, Josephine also became a university student. When first presented with the idea of going to college, Josephine declares, “Me?! Are you crazy? I am too old.” But with some persuasion, she took the leap and in 2006, she received her diploma in Social Sciences.

Always looking for opportunities to enrich her life, she started rabbit farming three months ago. It all began with a simple Google search. From there, interest was peaked and Josephine began visiting other rabbit farmers. Through yet another Google search, Josephine was introduced to Zidisha. Quickly becoming a member, she received her loan this month and was able to purchase wires for her rabbit cages and bowls for their food. She anticipates paying her loan back earlier than intended, in hopes of taking out another and building proper housing, using the knowledge she has gained from this week’s seminar. Josephine mentions several times throughout the day about her dreams of owning as many as two hundred rabbits! With Zidisha and her undeniable go-getter attitude, I know she will achieve this.

Being new to rabbit farming, she decided to further her education to better serve her business. Currently owning seven rabbits of her own, Josephine did not want to expand until she was well versed in proper rabbit care. This three-day seminar covered a variety of topics, from husbandry, to rabbit reproduction management, to feeding schedules, to suitable housing, and even bookkeeping. This training course not only served educational purposes, but seizing opportunity when it arises, Josephine used these three days to network with fellow like-minded entrepreneurs. One of the most boisterous in class, Josephine initiated class introductions and suggested everyone exchange contacts in order to assist one another with their future business ventures. She even arranged for someone in class to create a Facebook group (making sure it was a closed group of course!). During our breaks, she did not pass up the chance to speak with more experienced rabbit farmers about their experiences, absorbing as much knowledge as she could.

There is so much more I could add about my day spent with Josephine, but I know it would all come back to her fierce dedication and the strong initiative she puts into all that she does. During one of our many conversations throughout the day, Josephine exclaims, “I want to succeed. I need to succeed. I am succeeding!” Spoken like a woman who knows what she wants out of life and is stopping at nothing to get there.

About This Loan

Loan Principal Disbursed: USD 362.00
Date Disbursed: Aug 12, 2012
Repayment Period: Number of months or weeks from disbursement until loan is fully repaid 13 months
Total Interest Due to Lenders: This is the annual interest rate proposed by the borrower. Lenders may bid to finance the loan at the borrower’s proposed interest rate, or at a lower rate if they desire. If more bids are received than the amount needed to fund the loan, the borrower will accept the bids with the lowest proposed interest rates.

All interest rates displayed on the Zidisha website are expressed as flat percentages of loan principal per year the loan is held. For example, for a loan of USD 100, taken at 4% annual interest with a repayment period of six months, the total interest amount will be USD 100 * 4% * (6 months / 12 months) = $2.

The expression of interest rates as flat percentages of loan principal amounts is intended to make calculation of interest amounts more intuitive for borrowers and for lenders, and to facilitate comparison with other microfinance loans in borrowers' communities, the majority of which also use the flat rate methodology to express interest rates.
USD 14.11 (3.57%)
Borrower Transaction Fees: A transaction fee paid to Zidisha, expressed as a total amount and as a flat annualized percentage of the loan principal amount. USD 19.76 (5.00%)
Total Amount (Including Interest and Transaction Fee) to be Repaid: Interest plus transaction fees, expressed as a total amount and as a flat annualized percentage of the loan principal amount. USD 33.87 (8.57%)
