About Zidisha Profiles Zidisha entrepreneurs write their own loan profiles and provide their own photos. English is not usually their first language, and many had to overcome great obstacles to obtain an education. Additionally, many do not have cameras and own only a small number of personal photos. As a result, the profiles are not always as polished as on other websites. To keep profiles genuine, Zidisha staff do not make any edits, with the exception of titles for clarity and English translations.

My Story

I am a university student studying accounting and finance, and at the same time I work for a charitable organization during vacations. The charitable organization helps disadvantaged children have access to education. Since I am the oldest in my family, I support my family as well. I have seven brothers. I own a taxi which allows me to support my family's needs as well as my own. The taxi is our only source of revenue because my father is only employed as a simple driver with a monthly revenue of 50,000 FCFA (USD 110) per month, and my mother does not work outside the home. I am applying for a loan because my own finances are limited: my aunt who is very dear to me paid for my education has had a serious accident and I paid for her medical care. Unfortunately the cost of her medical care drained my bank account, and I am left short of cash. My problem is that my taxi's motor needs to be replaced within fifteen days; otherwise I risk a serious breakdown. I have also paid for my studies with the money that I earn. Thank you for your kind understanding, as I cannot tell you everything unless I spend many days writing.

About My Business

I have a transport business named Barry21, which earns revenue of 280,000 FCFA (USD 617) per month. I had been planning to buy a new car, before having this problem (i.e. breakdown of the current vehicle) because my goal is to build one of the biggest transport businesses in Dakar city, or even in all of Senegal.

My Loan Proposal

I would like to use this loan to buy a new taxi, because with two vehicles it will be much easier for me to earn enough to make my loan repayment comfortably and I will thus not get in the way of others who need Zidisha in order to advance their businesses. I also thank those who placed their confidence in my for my first Zidisha loan. If I do not manage to post comments very often, it is because the electricity service is often down in Dakar at the moment. I count on you all in order to realize my dream. I am already halfway down the path to success, and in my eyes now all that is thanks to Zidisha and its partners. Thanks for everything.

Good evening, there are only two days left to raise 71% of the loan, and for all of those who want to see this total reached, this is the moment. I hope sincerely that this is the second and last request for this loan. Zidisha, I count on you for this loan. You are the only family I have in matters of finance. Good evening, I am truly sorry for this long delay in posting comments, but at the moment in Dakar, I can tell you, it is very hard to collect payments for sales one has made on credit - and nothing can be sold except on credit. I can assure you the economy here does not move. I am not the only one to remark this - nothing is happening to move us forward, nothing: Dakar is really asleep. But anyway, nothing is better than you, Zidisha.

The reason I took so long to post comments is that my customers owed me a lot of money. It is a challenge because the sale of salad greens is like a chain: the farmer who does the work is the one who sells it first. Then, ladies we call "bana bana" buy it in bulk and sell it at the retail level. They come to buy it and often take it on credit, and it sometimes takes a long time for them to repay the credit. We can't be hard on them, because these days in Dakar life is hard, everyone cries and it is as though hope itself is dwindling away.

But I thank you for entrusting me with your loan despite these hard circumstances, and I hope that our relationship will last until I finish the construction of my building, which is almost complete. I would like to make a video depicting all of our history together and share it with you, after I have completed repayment of this loan, which I hope to be in a position to do starting in January. Thank you.

Good evening, I have returned now, and I'd like to begin by apologizing for the long time I've taken to post comments, which must have seemed very long to you lenders. However I will do my best to share an update now. At the moment, lettuce greens are commanding a good price in the markets, and at the same time with Christmas vacation approaching, I have to cover quite a few expenses for my younger siblings who are still in school. I'd also like to mention one of my counsins, whom I have referred to Zidisha. He works with me in the fields. I would even say that it is thanks to him that I found this work growing fruits and vegetables. You'll probably have the chance to meet him soon, as I plan to help him open his own Zidisha account. Wishing everyone a wonderful evening.

Good evening,
Today I will say was a pressure-filled day. I am so tense because this loan is crucial. Yesterday someone offered me a Renault Clio with problems in the motor and roof for 500000 FCFA. In order to verify the price in good condition I went to a parking lot to ask and he said it would cost me 2000000 FCFA. I did the calculations on repairs for the car which came to 357000 FCFA. Imagining the gain that this would bring me if I bought this car, I trembled since I see with this figure I can begin my studies again as well as my wife who will give birth at the beginning of January. Finally paying the loan in its entirety without using individual parts that I had and I’m back to a new beginning without loan. That would be happiness. Alas all this can’t be realized because I’ve barely completed my loan. But I can’t finish without thanking the ghosts, that is to say those who have placed their confidence in me in the past and who are there to renew that confidence in me. I ask you to come work with me and I can assure you that you won’t be deceived. I count on you because the owner of the car delayed and the deal will be finished on Tuesday. I ask all to all me to have this extra because I will see it as the beginning of my renewed success. Thank you for your understanding and good night.

First, today my thoughts go to those affected by the floods in the world, particularly in the United States and Canada. I know this is a difficult time for them since I also lived through this situation earlier this year in Dakar. Second, I would like to ask the lenders to help me complete my loan before November 3rd and remind you that I was trusted twice before with loans. I remain optimistic of the faith the lenders have in my business. I would also like to thank you for allowing me to make this dream come true and this time I am certain it will be the last. I believe it is based on my experience of the past 3 years, going through ups and downs and blows that never prevented me from getting back up. I turn to your generosity, wish for peace in this world and in your homes. I count on your once more for the money left to start up the business.

mamadou sellou barry   Oct 20, 2012

Good evening
First I would like to thank the lenders who have trusted me through Zidisha: thank you for my loan extension date, when I had problems.
My last loan allowed me to buy a car, a Peugeot 205 I and to make some repairs. After 2 months, I sold the car because I had to face family expenses like financing my wedding. One week after the sale, I received a notification from the Police stating that the car I sold was not cleared and because the one who sold it to me was not in Dakar, the police held me for 24h. I was prosecuted and I spent one week in prison. After the sentencing, I was purely and simply released because I was able to prove that the car was registered fraudulently by the Dakar Department of Mining meaning that the fraud was coming from a State Department. I have been through hell since then because I lost a lot of money through this process, after my release I did not want to disappoint my partners who trusted me. So, I took what was left from my savings account and I invested it in a henhouse and as they say, misery loves company. While I was away at my mother’s bedside, she was ill, my employee forgot to put a tarp over the car and the rain flooded the henhouse. I suffered a lot.

But I thank God for this loan because through it I was able to make profits and it allowed me to marry, and make bricks that I swapped for my taxi. I was able to buy an engine, a few doors and auto parts in France, they will arrive in Dakar late November. I swapped the cab for a plot of land as you are aware, Rent is high is Dakar. As if we work to pay the rent. I will also not forget the confidence that I gained during these 2 years. I feel ready to built Barry 21, I am in contact with a French partner who can provide me with auto parts, we are in advanced discussion.

I know some will ask why I waited until now to tell this story, that is because I wanted to honor my first contract with Zidisha that is to pay those debts to allow others to achieve their project, and I invite all my fellow citizens to do the same and thank you once again and I am still available for your questions and advices.

And I also would like to apply for a new loan as early as tomorrow because I was just told that the items I ordered arrived in Dakar, now I just have to take care of custom formalities at the port. Goodbye,

Good evening everybody,
I am happy to be back on here. Last time I logged in I had preferred to leave Sam’s comment (Zidisha’s Client Relationship Manager). He is a very nice guy; I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for waiting for me for almost thirty minutes.
Just like Sam explained, my new goals are poultry farming and the construction of my parents’ new house. I have suffered a big loss because I was away visiting my family and my wife and my employee didn’t do the job I left him. The chicken coop was too dirty and those who know how a chicken coop works will understand why there were deaths. I am looking at the balance and thinking about how I can recover because I have a lot of people counting on me. I wanted to post pictures of my wedding but my wife was against it, that’s why there are no photos. I would also like to let you know that I have not given up on my idea of creating Barry21. However, rent is so expensive in Dakar, so I thought it was time to think about a house. On my rent alone I spend more than a hundred thousand every months to house my family. It’s one of the major hassles of Senegalese people.
Good evening everybody.

Dear Lenders,

My name is Sam Gant and I'm currently the Client Relationship Manager active here in Dakar, Senegal. Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Mamadou Barry, an earnest and thoughtful young man, to discuss how his business has been going and his plans for the future. His involvement with his taxi operation has been evolving: although initially he had two taxis, he has sold one and now rents the other out to an independent driver who remits a percentage of his profits to Mamadou every month. Mamadou now has more time and energy to focus on his current business, a chicken coop that he maintains outside of Dakar. 45 days ago he purchased 500 chicks, of which around 400 remain, and he is ready to begin selling them as early as this week in preparation for the holiday of Ramadan which begins July 20th. Purchased for 500 CFA originally, the chickens are resold for between 2000 and 2500 CFA.

Mamadou has a degree in accounting and a perspicacious understanding of the importance of bridging the international wealth divide. Although much of his energy is devoted to raising and marketing his chickens, he has not neglected his taxi business, and recently invested 100 Euros in a secondhand French motor that a contact in France will be shipping to him. He explains that even with the shipping costs the transaction is a good one, because a similar motor would cost more than double that price in Dakar, and his younger brother here, a mechanic, will be able to make any necessary repairs and adjustments. Mamadou is a capable organizer and anticipates paying off this loan early to apply for his third Zidisha loan.

Good evening everyone,

I received the camera and it was a great pleasure. However I would like to ask the organizer to try if possible to assist us with the fee I was charged to recover the camera from Customs. It was a bit expensive; I spent 30,080 CFA (about $65) and I can assure you that for a small-scale entrepreneur like me it was a lot of money. Thank you to Zidisha, SEM Fund and all their partners.

Dear all,

We will be crediting the amount Mr. Barry paid to recover the camera back to him. Best,

Julia Kurnia

Director, Zidisha Inc.

What is this about a camera?

Greetings,

Today I would like to express my thanks to Mr Diallo, director of Zidisha's verification partner in Dakar, Senegal. I don't want to throw him flowers, but I would like you to know that he is a man who is approachable and considerate of everyone, a man who works for the success of others. Thanks to Zidisha and its partner organization, and thanks to Mr Diallo.

Hi, my name is Jenna Garchar and I am currently a Client Relations intern with Zidisha. Today, I went with interns Erik and Hanna to visit M. Barry at his home. We sat in his living room to talk about the impact of the loan and his plans for the future. After spending time with M. Barry, it is clear that he is kind and motivated person. He is a University student studying Accounting and Finance so he spends his time studying, working and volunteering. We found out that he is recently engaged and will have his wedding in a few months! Throughout our conversation he frequently mentioned his friends and family and the importance of being able to support them as well as himself. He is only 24-years old and seems to be a determined and goal-oriented entrepreneur who wants the best for everyone.

BUSINESS
Right now, M. Barry owns two cars: one traditional taxi that picks up a variety of clients each day and one private car that has the same clients and set routes each day. He bought a car with the loan and was also able to fix his first car which had problems with its motor. He bought his first car by himself but is thankful to have his current loan now to be able to afford two cars for his business. His younger brother is a mechanic and is able to help M. Barry with both fixing and maintaining the vehicles. M. Barry has hired two chauffeurs to drive his cars. The chauffeurs must buy the gas for the vehicles (which is about 10,000CFA a day) and at the end of each day, both the chauffeurs give M. Barry 10,000CFA. The drivers keep any profit past that and also have a wage of 40,000CFA each month. M. Barry explained that both he and the drivers gain from the business that way.

IMPACT OF THE LOAN
The loan helped M. Barry purchase a second car for his business which increased his profits. He said he divides his earnings into two divisions; one to invest back into his business and the other to help support his family. He wants to be able to help any sick family members and wants to help out his younger brother who works a lot as his mechanic. The loan has helped increase his profits which has in turn helped take care of his family. With his marriage in only a few months, he will be able to help pay for his wedding as well!

FUTURE
M. Barry’s ultimate goal is to establish his Barry 21 car enterprise. He seems passionate about making it a successful reality. He wants to have five or six cars in total—at least three taxis and two private cars. He said that he needs a lot of money to be able to purchase the cars in good condition (or be able to fix them) and said he will build his enterprise slowly, one car at a time. M. Barry wants Barry 21 to be a family business with his cousins, brothers and close friends. Since his younger brother is a mechanic, they will be able to work together to keep the business sustainable.

Before having seen Zidisha, I had a dream and did not know how to achieve it. This is why I will never forget the day were my friend talked to me about this NGO. Being from a family of chauffeurs, since my childhood, my dream was to create a transport business that would be managed exclusively by my family- this is to say my sisters and my brothers and my cousins, etc. We should rely on the experience of our parents who know how to do it. This is why after my baccalaureate, I did all sorts of jobs to save up and after my aunt helped me so that I could buy my own taxi. With the unemployment rate that does not stop increasing in Africa, I believe those that are intelligent will think to invest in their own business instead of waiting for the state. I am applying for a new loan to buy a new car that I drove myself during vacations. RIght now, I am in contact with potential monthly customers that work in a hotel in town. According to my calculations, I can find myself with a minimum of 200,000 CFA ($437) that will be saved. Because I have three clients that I will bring in the morning and pick up in the evening, and each will pay me 5,000 CFA ($11) per day that I will save for the purchase of a new car. The money that I will make the rest of the day will be for the payment of the Zidisha loan and paying off the debt of the car. If anything is left over, I will think of looking for a ground that I will pay for each. There is my objective and I believe that in 5 years I will have a business with the cars. Already, my little sisters and brothers will not be obligated to wait in line for an internship like they make them do. Indeed, I would like them to avoid the difficulties that I had to undergo. Thank you and good luck to everyone.

The night where I saw your message I automatically called Allen to prevent it.

well, no problem about that. i already thought so that this was an unintentional mistake, so never mind. as you can see i made a bid on your loan so it's allright. and by chance i could even verify that you paid back your first loan (though i didn't look for that). i would have made a bid anyway.

salut,
melliecarma

Good evening, I am very sad and very surprised that you think this of me. I am a student in accounting and finance and I know if I want it. I know how to play with money but I am far from thinking of doing that with you. I had not hidden to Allen that I am expecting a sum of money that is going to come from Mali. I made an error of perception because if you see I have recopied exactly what was next to the boxes. I know also my first loan quickly because of the interest rate of 3% that i proposed. If you are interested I can give you my bank account number which is at BECAEAO, you will see I have the money which is waiting to be completed to buy the car. This is to avoid the problem that I wanted to go see Allen so that he would see it himself. And finally I would like to put the interest rate at 2%. If you could help me modify this that would help me a lot. Thanks

hey mamadou,

don't loose your head about this silly mistake. mistakes happen, and this one is no big deal as it has been spotted, pointed out + corrected in no time. it was just a matter of asking and a little time. no need to feel bad about it as it even wasn't your fault. and nobody said anything bad about you. i just wanted to point the matter out as there might have been created a wrong impression if it stood uncorrected for some time. i value people from africa as they always seem to have a sunny mentality in their soul which is deeply missing here in europe. so please calm down, okay? =;-) =8-)

bonne chance,
melliecarma

Bonsoir mamadou,

hello mamadou (and allen),

are you sure that the proposed interest rate of 0,00% is correct (as in zero/nothing)?!? i at least am not. i have to work for my pay, i don't get it for nought. and as this is a new loan with no bids yet, i guess it's rather an obmission in setting up the loan correctly... zero percent would mean charity... hmmm...

whatever, i won't bid on zero percent. if a real percentage shows up i might as the business description sounds good to me. so please clear things up. thanks!

have a nice day,
melliecarma

EDIT: i read your borrower description just now and understand the situation better. i still would like to know if zero percent interest is correct. if yes, i would have to choose if i want to invest or not. if yes at least it would be clear that i would get nothing back than the money initially spent.

Hi Mamadou and Melliecarma,
I'm pretty sure this wasn't a mistake as Mamadou was able to pay back a $900 loan at almost 8% (incl 5% zidisha fee) in 2 months (see most recently ended loans) And now tries to refinance this amount at a lower rate, ie a loan at 5%. It is a very interesting question that has come up in several comments previously: is Zidisha about charity (and therefore 'free' loans?) or about making gains at both sides? (profits for lenders and lower rates for borrowers...) It is probably a bit of both and borrowers are obviously testing the limits to see how low they can go.

Salut Mamadou,

Hello to all. It is with great pleasure that I write you once again. I want to thank all who have helped me out and Julia who has excelled in setting up an NGO that has helped the local youth like myself accomplish their dreams. In my opinion, reimbursing my loan is the best way to prove to my lending partners that I am working with you for a fixed goal-success. I am planning to ask for another loan because I would like to by a taxi. I would drive it myself as I have a drivers license. I plan on driving mornings and passing the car off to my cousin who would take over at night. This is, as I have said, one step in creating a family run business- Barry21. Hello from Dakar. With you help I have recently been able to aid Mamadou with his business venture. Attached is a photo of Mamadou with the check that all of you out there have helped finance. Mamadou is now planning on getting his taxi service back on track, a profitable business service here in Dakar (Think the yellow cabs of Manhattan and you can understand the number of taxis).
His plan is to loan out his taxi to a driver,(thereby creating employment for someone), while he goes to school. With the profits he makes he plans to grow his business to integrate more cabs. One of the benefits he says is that his brother is a mechanic, which helps him avoid the costs on repairs!

Good evening
I would like to request a grace period of two months because I am about to invest in the marechage. At this time I have been looking for 6 months for cultivatable land Dakar. I have been promised a look at one which I can finalize at the end of the month. You know that land is the best source of income, and sincerely I want this to be my new destination through Zidisha. I am a father of a family at the same time caring for my family Ramadan is already there. I cannot fulfill all these responsibilities so I request my lenders to give me another two months to serve as precautions because I believe that 'the land of marechage I'll buy I can pay my debts without delay. I thank you kindly for understanding me and at the same time I know that you have 2 months which tires me out. Thank you to you all the peace and happiness of the rain falling on you and may the misery of floods recede from you amen.

100% Repaid

About This Loan

Loan Principal Disbursed: USD 1,006.96
Date Disbursed: Aug 2, 2011
Repayment Period: Number of months or weeks from disbursement until loan is fully repaid 14 months
Total Interest Due to Lenders: This is the annual interest rate proposed by the borrower. Lenders may bid to finance the loan at the borrower’s proposed interest rate, or at a lower rate if they desire. If more bids are received than the amount needed to fund the loan, the borrower will accept the bids with the lowest proposed interest rates.

All interest rates displayed on the Zidisha website are expressed as flat percentages of loan principal per year the loan is held. For example, for a loan of USD 100, taken at 4% annual interest with a repayment period of six months, the total interest amount will be USD 100 * 4% * (6 months / 12 months) = $2.

The expression of interest rates as flat percentages of loan principal amounts is intended to make calculation of interest amounts more intuitive for borrowers and for lenders, and to facilitate comparison with other microfinance loans in borrowers' communities, the majority of which also use the flat rate methodology to express interest rates.
USD 23.31 (1.98%)
Borrower Transaction Fees: A transaction fee paid to Zidisha, expressed as a total amount and as a flat annualized percentage of the loan principal amount. USD 58.74 (5.00%)
Total Amount (Including Interest and Transaction Fee) to be Repaid: Interest plus transaction fees, expressed as a total amount and as a flat annualized percentage of the loan principal amount. USD 82.05 (6.98%)
