About Zidisha Profiles Zidisha entrepreneurs write their own loan profiles and provide their own photos. English is not usually their first language, and many had to overcome great obstacles to obtain an education. Additionally, many do not have cameras and own only a small number of personal photos. As a result, the profiles are not always as polished as on other websites. To keep profiles genuine, Zidisha staff do not make any edits, with the exception of titles for clarity and English translations.

My Story

My name is Soda Ndiaye. I am Senegalese, 25 and live in Dakar. I am a self-employed retailer at Point E (a district in Dakar). I sell cosmetic products and artistic clothes. Specifically, I sell Batik shirts and dresses (Batik is a traditional dieing method used in Senegal). I work with Batik artists from the Casamance (a southern region in Senegal). I also sell soaps. In partnership with women who makes soaps, I sell soaps with carrot, carite (a sweet smelling sap from a local tree) and honey fragrances. With the goal of helping my family, especially my mother, I hope to develop my business, especially in regards to selling my art, which will be quite profitable this summer during the tourist season and will allow me to open my own boutique one day.

About My Business

Though selling art and cosmetic products in Senegal is quite profitable, my means of doing so is quite limited. I occasionally make loans to raise money for my merchandise.. I lend out my goods to bureaucrats, and take them back at the end of the month, unless they want to buy it. With the aim of helping my family, especially my mother, I hope to develop my business by selling Art, which during this period, sell very well, but because of a lack of means, I am using Zidisha to solicit a loan of 450 000 CFA to buy art merchandises. With this loan I could buy artistic dresses, table cloths, shoes and leather bags.

My Loan Proposal

I hope to use this loan develop my business, especially towards Art sales, which sell incredibly well during the summer tourist season. However, because of a lack of resources, I am soliciting a loan of 450 000 F CFA from Zidisha to supply my products. With this loan I will procure artistic dresses, tablecloths, shoes and leather purses.

Dear lenders,

I would like to provide a summary of Madame Ndiaye's situation, and the reason she has fallen behind in repaying her loan.

Madame Ndiaye received her loan of $691 in November 2010, and used it to increase the inventory of household decor and clothing accessories which she sold from a small shop in Dakar. When her loan was 38% repaid, her shop was demolished to make way for new construction, and she was forced to resort to making sales door to door. This resulted in a substantial reduction in income. I visited Madame Ndiaye during a trip to Senegal in March of this year. She is a single mother still in her twenties, and lives with her mother. Her oldest daughter had to leave the private school she had previously attended due to lack of money for tuition. Madame Ndiaye is responsible for supporting her children as well as her mother, and she has not managed to make any loan repayments in over a year.

We have remained in constant communication with Madame Ndiaye throughout this period, and she has also posted frequent comments which you may view on her loan profile page.

Should you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Julia Kurnia

Greetings Zidisha,

Greetings Julia Kurnia,

Hello to all Zidisha lenders,

I wish all the best fortune to you for your generosity and your understanding. I'd like to let you know that it has now been a year since I was evicted from my store location, and for one year now I have been selling my merchandise door to door, with a difficult family situation because I am divorced with two children to support without assistance from anyone, and moreover with the difficult environment in our country at the moment, when there is a good deal of construction. I would like to ask you to kindly grant me a new repayment schedule, because I have fallen far behind in my repayments, but I hope with all my heart to get back on my feet and start anew.

Hi dear readers, it is Issa Diop, intern at Zidisha in Senegal, involved of operations in following and recovering funds. Today I met Soda Ndiaye. She is a businesswomen but for a few months, business has fallen off due to construction which forced her to relocate her boutique from Point E, a neighborhood of the capital frequented by loyal clients; this explains her tardiness in her reimbursements. In effect thanks to the loan obtained through Zidisha, Mme Soda Ndiaye has significantly bettered her situation thanks to the purchase of merchandise in bulk quantities She worked at Point E for 6 years and she is very profitable thanks to the support of Zidisha just until the day when she was displaced with all her merchandise. Not having anywhere to go at the moment, Mme Soda Ndiaye gave the merchandise to other retailers at a modest price so as not to lose all her goods. Unfortunately, since that time, she has been confronted with difficulties in being paid by these retailers. Since these developments, the activities of Soda are almost moribund, she can no longer support her needs, even her child was transferred from the private school for not paying the monthly fees. Nevertheless, to honor her engagement with Zidisha, Mme Soda Ndiaye, despite the potential implications to her credit score, will propose in the following days a rescheduling of her payment calendar. She does not give up, as she will continue still her small retail despite the lack of locale. Thus, she is seeking a more financially feasible locale to take up her activities in a stronger manner and reimburse all her debts. Thanks!

Dear lenders,

I spoke recently with Madame Ndiaye. She has still not been able to reopen her shop, following the demolition of her previous location in the Point E neighborhood of Dakar. Zidisha's intern in Senegal, Issa Diop, is working to get in touch again with Madame Ndiaye to discuss repayment of her loan on an extended schedule.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.

Best regards,

Hello, it's Soda Ndiaye. I'm sorry for the great delay in making repayments. I had difficulty paying because I did not have a location from which to sell my merchandise, because the storefront where I had been displaying my merchandise is under construction and its owner asked me to put my business on hold until the construction was finished. I have been trying to make arrangements to open a location in the large Foire market, but in all honesty I will not have the necessary cash to make all my past due payments before May 10. After that date, my new location at the Foire will be finished and all my sales revenue will be used for repayments.

Hello from Senegal,
Yesterday I went to visit Soda in the outskirts of Dakar. She has had to relocate from here usual shop to selling on consignment at the shop pictured here. However, as she is far from the center of town it is not particularly bustling with clients. She is continuing to make Batiks but is having trouble selling them. She hopes to make back payments as soon as possible. Also attached is a photo of the children from her neighborhood.

Hello, I send my greetings to all my partners and ask them to forgive me due to the delayed arrival of the shipping container which held the merchandise I had ordered from Italy: women's high-heeled shoes, men's shirts, purses, doll sets, shoes, perfumes, women's jewelry, men's watches, etc. I was not able to make my December installment due to this delay, and I plan to send you photos to confirm it. And I plan to make two installments for the month of January, and I send you my apologies. Thank you for your understanding. Affectionate greetings, I am grateful to you and wish you all the best in the world.

Repayment Schedule Changes

Soda Ndiaye   Dec 25, 2011

Good afternoon Julia, it's Soda. I am still having problems because I do not yet have a retail location and my business is not stable, and I am still having problems in that my children have not yet been able to attend school because we do not have enough money. I am living with my mother who is supporting me. I truly desire to repay my loan in order to have a clear conscience because I had a lot of trouble communicating when you called me [due to poor quality phone connection]. I have a great deal of respect for you and the lenders, therefore I am requesting a repayment schedule which will allow me to pay CFA 10,000 per month starting in January, because I have financial difficulties. Please grant me this, and thank you for your understanding, thanks.

Greetings to all Zidisha lenders,

I apologize for the delay in repaying my loan. I am no longer able to sell merchandise at my former store location, because I was evicted due to new construction at the site, and I am responsible for feeding my two children without assistance from anyone. I have now been selling my goods door to door for the past eight months. I used the funds from my loan to order merchandise from Italy, and to this day I have not received it. Due to my difficult financial situation, I have not been able to pay rent. Thank you for your understanding in accepting the modification in my repayment schedule.

About This Loan

Loan Principal Disbursed: USD 691.00
Date Disbursed: Nov 24, 2010
Repayment Period: Number of months or weeks from disbursement until loan is fully repaid 28 months
Total Interest Due to Lenders: This is the annual interest rate proposed by the borrower. Lenders may bid to finance the loan at the borrower’s proposed interest rate, or at a lower rate if they desire. If more bids are received than the amount needed to fund the loan, the borrower will accept the bids with the lowest proposed interest rates.

All interest rates displayed on the Zidisha website are expressed as flat percentages of loan principal per year the loan is held. For example, for a loan of USD 100, taken at 4% annual interest with a repayment period of six months, the total interest amount will be USD 100 * 4% * (6 months / 12 months) = $2.

The expression of interest rates as flat percentages of loan principal amounts is intended to make calculation of interest amounts more intuitive for borrowers and for lenders, and to facilitate comparison with other microfinance loans in borrowers' communities, the majority of which also use the flat rate methodology to express interest rates.
USD 77.91 (4.83%)
Borrower Transaction Fees: A transaction fee paid to Zidisha, expressed as a total amount and as a flat annualized percentage of the loan principal amount. USD 80.62 (5.00%)
Total Amount (Including Interest and Transaction Fee) to be Repaid: Interest plus transaction fees, expressed as a total amount and as a flat annualized percentage of the loan principal amount. USD 158.52 (9.83%)
