This is my story, and sometimes I feel embarrassed to share it. I was raised in a bad neighborhood in Kericho County where the supervisors of the tea farmers would first approach the women for sex before giving them any employment. I specifically came from a mother who was sexually assaulted, contracted HIV, and then gave birth to me as an HIV-positive child. I have endured stigma and suffering my entire life as a result of my single mother telling me the tale of how she became pregnant. Tears well up in my eyes when I think about how our family's health has been affected by poverty. I do, however, think that I was born a winner.
I was able to build a hotel business that is more lucrative and supports my family after securing a job in a tea plantation where I saved enough money. I decided to do this because I couldn't bear to watch my mother being harassed whenever she needed work from the tea plantation. Despite efforts to report instances of sexual assault of women to the appropriate authorities, nothing happens because of corruption. I therefore request assistance from a lender in order to expand my hotel business and create a program that will safeguard women from sexual molestation because, to this day, I still experience trauma and suffering from being the victim of sexual assault and being HIV positive.
