About Me

My name is John K. Kanyingi.
I'm a self-employed architect in Mombasa, Kenya.
I'm married and I have two children.
I studied in the University of Nairobi where I graduated with Bachelor of Architecture in the year 1996. After completing my studies I got employed in an architectural firm where I gained enough working experience. I sat for my professional exams in the year 2003 and consequently got registered as an architect with the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors.

My Business

I practice architecture and the construction industry here in Mombasa is growing steadily. I have a small scale firm and endeavour to grow and participate in higher levels as an architectural firm.

My income comes from fees I charge in the consultancy in the architectural design and supervision of buildings. My average monthly income is $900 which goes into paying rents, school fees, stationery, drafting & printing services among others.

I've continued to give pro bono services for construction of selected community projects such as children's homes, churches, schools and cases of affordable structures for people living in very inferior structures. In other categories of some community projects I've considered working with minimal charges or with tokens determined by the beneficiaries.

Loan Proposal

Last year, 2017, was an election year here in Kenya and the economy was greatly affected. Construction jobs are still very scarce due to the electioneering.

I have been asked to to do two residential house projects in two different counties outside my Mombasa home county. As such I have to travel and work outside my home town for four days.

I need $60 for return tickets, $90 for accommodation and food, and $100 for car hire for two days. The total amount I need is $250 so that I can travel and collect data for this work .

I expect to earn $2000 and my total expenses, including the travelling mentioned above, will be about $500. I therefore will be able to repay the loan, pay bills that will be due and save the rest for future recurrent expenditure.

I purchased a desktop computer and this has greatly helped in completion of design work in good time. I'm very grateful to all my lenders.

My income is still unexpectedly erratic. However, I'm optimistic I will be able to repay the loan within next one month and hopefully be able to source more funds from Zidisha for alternative income generating ventures.

The income I expected when requesting for the loan has been insufficient to even sustain my basic running costs. However this is temporary and I'm optimistic I'll repay the loan within a few weeks.

I'm very grateful to each one of you for your kind lending to me to enable me to buy a used desktop computer for increased output in preparation of drawings in three-dimension and also the usual draughting of architectural drawings.

Computer aided design and printing with convenience in different locations has increased my output against time. The funds I received were very helpful and that's why I'm encouraged to seek more funds so as to continue growing.
Much appreciation to all my lenders.

    Hello Dieter.
Yes I completed my loan but a number of problems came up. One time Zidisha indicated I hadn't repaid but the service provider told me that there was an issue with the system as the repayment hadn't reflected. On two occasions I got from Zidisha what I think are reversed repayments. On 28th June I received a string of 10 emails acknowledging one payment. Again on 29th June I received another string of 9 emails with the same content. My repayment schedule indicates that I have a balance of Ksh3140. I hope all will be well when I pay this amount.

    I received Ksh 24,140 ( about $24).

I travelled to Nakuru county which is about 700km from my Mombasa home county. I took measurements on site and studied the environment. It took me about 3 days because I travelled to and fro by train and partly with a hired car.
I have embarked on the design work and just before completion I'll travel again to Nakuru to present and have discussions on site with the client.

To all my lenders : My great appreciation for your great and valuable support that have made me successful this far.

I will travel to Nakuru and Machakos county, take site measurements and get the architectural brief for two residential house projects.
I'll use money received for travelling, food and accommodation for about four days that I'll be away from my home county of Mombasa.
I sincerely thank you Emanuele Lego, Pay-It-Forward and all of you other lenders and the entire Zidisha fraternity for making my plans succeed.

I'm personally very grateful to all my lenders and wish them the best in their endeavours,

I bought two ink cartridges (black and coloured) for my HP printer. This happened exactly at the time when I needed to print three-dimension drawings for three proposals of some residential buildings.
The three proposals were approved and I was paid part payments amounting to $1000. I used this money to settle house rent, office rent, salaries and the associated bills and expenses.

I will buy HP printer cartridges.
These will help me print from my home work station for convenience.
A big thank you to all my lenders for your kind and much needed support.

With this amount I will top up with about $3 and buy a HP printer cartridge and be able to print documents and drawings for projects I'm handling.
I'm grateful to Mr. Paul Buchheit for his kind and prompt assistance.
