About Me

My names are Johnstone Odukhula Oduori.
I was born in a family of nine in the rural western part of kenya. I really treasured my my parents who were peasant farmers and struggled a lot to educate me from the proceeds they got by tilling the small farm mostly in harsh weather.
I struggled a lot in my education and after my o-levels I went to a teachers college to do P1 course but dropped out due to fees.I left for Nairobi where I worked as a gardener and gatekeeper as I raised fees to go to college.
I managed to take a clerical course which later enabled me to work with insurance.
I proceeded to take an insurance examination and later on managed to join university.
Out of campus I have been able to form an organization that trains/capacity builds youth and women in life skills to face the challenges in life.

My Business

Besides selling insurance,I am giving back to the community via providing trainings/capacity building youth and women in micro business management,group formations,proposal writing and fund raising.
my market is mainly religious institutions,registered Community based organizations etc.
I charge them a small fee for the trainings to help buy training materials and hire of tools.
Currently there is minimal competition as the market is so big and the need for training great.
The risk is that at times some groups have no income to pay for the training fee and others default totally.

Project Proposal

Support the native youths and women am working with in Turkana to access seed capital for their daily business ventures in the areas of fish selling, groceries, goat trade or bodaboda ( motorcycle taxis).
Am working with excluded out of school youths, in a marginalized community where basic social infrastructure is wanting.
I have engaged them in capacity building trainings part of which is entrepreneurship and most are now keen and engaging in small businesses.
A common challenge they have is sometimes getting capital to start off the day.
This fund will help by enabling them access a small capital in the start of their business day and they pay back with a small interest in the evening.
Example; a bodaboda rider who has no fuel to start the day will access a seed capital of KES 200, then pay back in the evening with an extra KES.20.
This will enable individuals to grow themselves, families and their community at Large being able to self improve by affording their basic needs like food,water and health services.
With ability and opportunity to make a decent income young girls and women will be less vulnerable to sexual exploitation from big fish traders who sometimes gives them fish on 'credit' but in exchange of sexual favors as a guarantee, or even sex trade to meet their needs like shelter and food; whereas men are more likely to engage in petty crime like mugging, theft or even banditry to get income.
