Contributing to a Worthy Cause

By Betsy Ramser Jaime

Mary Adjei is a 33-year-old seamstress, living in Accra, Ghana. She holds 12 years of experience in the field and now has her own business with two apprentices working with her to learn the trade.

In addition to her sewing business, Mary also operates another small business which helps to bring in additional income as well.

When she’s not busy working, she also spends time with her husband and three children.

Since joining the Zidisha community in September 2020, Mary has been able to raise almost a dozen Zidisha-funded loans ranging from $13 to $832.

Mary initially sought funding in order to purchase new and modern sewing machines so that she would have the latest technology in the industry. She also hoped that she would be able to expand her workplace, in order to make her business more attractive to her customers.

Since her initial loan, Mary has made steady progress with the help of her lenders, sharing, ‘I am happy that my lovely lenders have started contributing for this worthy cause of gradually establishing an entrepreneurial center to train young and upcoming girls. This will help in the near future to reduce the high rate of unemployment in my country of Ghana. Past loans raised so far have been used to decorate the sewing shop. Another machine has also been bought. Gradually, I will reach my goal. I only need your support.’

Most recently, on May 6, 2022, Mary took to her Zidisha discussion page and shared, ‘I am very grateful to all my backers for helping me raise this loan. This loan will be used to pay for another modern sewing machine which will help set up an entrepreneurial center very soon. Thank you all and may God bless you.’
