About Me

My name is Susan Kaloina. I was born around the Mount Kenya region of Kenya in a family of seven. My parents were and still are peasant farmers where they do subsistence farming. I was brought up in a rural area with a lot of hardship where my family struggled to get even to get basic necessities. I endured deprived upbringing and navigated safely into adulthood.

I went to school up to secondary school and later relocated to Mombasa city to live with my cousin. This is where my life changed drastically as I became accustomed to urban life. I enjoyed ‘luxuries’ such as electricity, hot showers, bus rides, etc. for the first time.

My kind cousin enrolled me in a beauty course, where I was taught beauty aspects and public relations. I worked as an intern for one year and later, with the help of my cousin, I opened a beauty salon where I do all kinds of beauty services.

My Business

My business is called Babyface Salon. As the name suggests, I turn people’s faces into baby-like smooth faces. I normally specialize with ladies and young girls. Through the years, I have created a valuable cluster of clients and they are my main source of clients. Their referrals are also very crucial in my work.

In a busy month, I make about $250, which I plough back to the business and use some for my upkeep and to support my siblings back at home. I am hoping to open a beauty school in the near future if I get the reliable credit. I am hoping that, with partners like Zidisha, I will be able to realize this dream very soon.

Loan Proposal

I intend to use USD $170 of this money to pay for my annual license for this year. This is a requirement for one to run a business in this city. I will use the remaining amount to boost my inventory of beauty products such as hair pieces, lotions, and weaves.

The advantage of having a large inventory is saving on the purchases, since I will buy in bulk. This will also save me time since I do not have to go buy these items every now and then when they run out.
