I was born in Nairobi, Kenya. I attended primary school until class 6 in Nairobi and then went to my family’s rural area in Siaya village in western Kenya to complete primary school. At this point, however, I was forced to drop out of school because I lacked school fees.
I was married in Siaya and did small business work where I was selling vegetables. In 1978, I returned to Nairobi and had two children. To provide for my family I started a business selling vegetables and fish from Lake Victoria. In 1997, I trained with an organization making dresses, school sweaters, and uniforms. I then opened my own business making these clothes.
In the future, I want to introduce my family to business so that they can run their own businesses. I want to bring stability for my family so that they can be successful in their own businesses.
I have a business selling sweaters and vegetables from a shop in Kibera. I started this business after being trained as an entrepreneur, and specifically a tailor, by a local organization. I started my business because I thought I could do well and bring in more income.
One large challenge I have faced is that because there are so many vegetable venders: and if you can't sell all of your stock it spoils. Additionally, you have to pay a lot of money to transport the vegetables to the shop. With my sweater business, it costs a lot to service the machines if they break down. Additionally, prices for materials can rise very fast.
I want to expand my sweater business because with my vegetable business the stock often spoils. With sweaters I can keep the stock and sell to customers any time. So I want to buy more stock so that the business can expand. After this I would like to hire other people so that we can make more sweaters.
The purpose of the loan is to purchase more materials for my sweater-making business. Additionally, I would like to use part of it to repair my sewing machine so that I am able to produce more sweaters. without fixing my machine I am unable to make sweaters fast enough to provide for customers. Purchasing more materials will allow me to make more sweaters and bring in more profits. This loan will allow me to expand my business and bring more stability to my business and my family's life. I hope that it will allow me to better provide for my family.
